Guess how many violated the stricter COVID rules in Hungary?
Authorities have taken action in 263 cases since the government decree on stricter coronavirus-related defence measures entered into force on Monday, a member of the operative board responsible for handling the epidemic said.
Â
Over the past four days, the authorities issued warnings to 221 people, fined 23 and filed misdemeanour charges against 19 for violating restrictions, Robert Kiss told an online press conference on Friday.
In the past 24 hours, 2,711 people have been ordered into self-quarantine, 569 of them upon entering across the border, he said. Currently, 25,374 are in home quarantine, he said. Of those self-isolating, 1,687 have allowed the authorities to electronically control compliance with quarantine regulations, Kiss said.

he said. Twenty-eight cases took place on public transport, while 105 were in shops, restaurants or public offices, he added. As regards Thursday’s UEFA Super Cup final at Budapest’s Puskas Arena, Kiss said all spectators who attended the event had their temperatures checked upon entry into the stadium.

which was organised under strict health protocols in order to prevent the spread of the virus, he said. Foreign ticket holders had to undergo a health screening when entering the country and present a negative coronavirus test no older than 72 hours, he added. Temperature screenings at the arena detected 16 people with higher body temperatures but all of them were cleared after a second screening, Kiss said.

Nice numbers – I take them as they are because I cannot judge how people in Hungary adhere currently, at this moment to the hygiene rules since I am not in the country at the moment. However, I am somebody, who lived in Hungary for 15 years, who has still a flat in Budapest and who is still once a month in Hungary under normal circumstances without closed borders etc. So I can claim for me that I gained some experiences with common habits of larger parts of today’s Hungarian society (so I do not say, that every Hungarian citizen is behaving like described in the following). Based on these experiences I am questioning the numbers reported in this article because I assume that they are simply based on sample checks and I assume further that the sample of thoise checks was very small, meaning the authorities did not really check strictly whether people comply with the hygiene rules. So I assume that the numbers are a bit statistically distorted. I say this also based on my experiences that I gained when I was the last time in Hungary in this summer. I was in Budapest in June and August. During this time I also used public transportation – and this is what I observed in Budapest at tat time:
– While in June, short after the suspension of the so called “lockdown” in most of the EU countries on 15th June, 2020, many people in many countries still preferred to meet in open air spaces due to the still existing corona infection risk, I saw at the same time in Budapest already and again events and pubs, hosting 50 to 100 people in closed, badly ventilated spaces. The same I saw in August.
– In August I saw in the Budapest BKK buses many people who did not wear a mask at all or at least not correctly (leaving the nose uncovered). And I was not the only one who oberserved this. My estimation is that in August in any bus which I entered at that time only one third of the passengers wore the mask correctly – the other two third did not although it was mandatory already at that time (but there was no fine yet). During nighttime, when the night lines are operating, I witnessed even very crowded buses like in the non-corona times while only a fraction of the passengers in those crowded buses wore a mask. Let’s assume for the moment that during the daytime in every BKK bus are sitting in average and approx. 30 people. Based on my observations in August approx. 20 people per single BKK bus would violate the hygiene rules – only 10 would adhere. This estimation from August does not match with the numbers reported in this article. However nd perhaps, in the meantime the discipline regarding the hygiene rules improved dramatically in Hungary and Budapest – however, I am a bit in doubt that this happend in between.
