2015 crime rate down, says Hungarian national police report

Budapest, March 4 (MTI) – Hungary’s national police registered a total of 268,000 crimes in 2015, down significantly from the 309,000 registered in 2014, police said on their website on Friday.

Cybercrime continues to be on the rise, according to the 2015 data, but overall, police forces did not encounter any new crime methods or new types of criminal behaviour last year, the report said.

The most common types of cybercrimes committed last year were theft and fraud relating to online shopping.

The national police said it was especially worrying that a growing number of primary school students post photos and personal information on social media giant Facebook that can get either them or people close to them in trouble.

Upholding the law on the internet is getting more and more challenging for police, as cyberspace gives drug dealers a market on which they can conduct their business anonymously, the report said.

Concerning domestic violence cases, the police said a growing number of cases involve psychoactive drug users assaulting their parents or grandparents at home.

The report said many migrants in Hungary were victims of theft or mugging in 2015. Investigating crimes against migrants, however, proved difficult for police because in most cases, the migrants moved on to western Europe just a few short days after arriving in Hungary.

The report also touched on tobacco shop robberies saying that the dark foil covers on shop windows made robbers feel that they ran a low risk of getting caught.
