Baku, March 6 (MTI) – Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán met Azeri President Ilham Aliyev near Baku on Sunday, the second day of his official visit to Azerbaijan, to discuss bilateral relations and opportunities to boost economic and cultural relations.
Hungary is impressed with the way Azerbaijan has responded to economic challenges caused by the global drop in oil prices, Orbán said at a joint press conference with Aliyev at the Azeri presidential palace.
Orbán said Hungary is ready to help Azerbaijan adapt to the new economic situation by offering trade opportunities in agriculture, IT and energy.
Aliyev said Hungary is a strategic partner for Azerbaijan and could play a key role in helping develop Azeri-EU relations.
The president touched on bilateral energy cooperation, noting that Azerbaijan’s gas reserves could help promote energy security and diversification in European countries.
Aliyev said Hungary’s expertise in agriculture could be useful for Azerbaijan, as the country views agricultural development as a priority.
Orbán presented an Order of Merit to First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva, the head of Azerbaijan’s Heydar Aliyev Foundation.
Before the meeting with Aliyev, the prime minister and his wife Anikó Lévai laid a wreath by the tomb of national leader Heydar Aliyev and his wife Zarifa Aliyeva in the Alley of Honor, a memorial park in Baku.
