Tobacco shop robbers tried to follow the suit of the famous Hungarian Whiskey Bandit
Two young men were sentenced to prison for several years by The Debrecen District Court. At the end of August, two juvenile robbed a tobacco shop in Debrecen, Dózsa György Street. The 18-year-old O. Richard was sentenced to five years in prison for armed robbery, while his accomplice, R. József, who participated in the crime as his abettor, was sentenced to 3 years and six months.
According to dehir.hu, the two boys first met each other during their previous stay in a boarding school, where they formed a good friendship. Their paths parted for a while until O. Richard paid a visit to his friend in August to make their old dream come true and rob a post office or a tobacco shop,
just as they saw it in the movies.
At today’s trial, the two young men pleaded themselves guilty. According to their statement, they have watched together the film based on the life of the Whiskey Bandit, which motivated them to carry out their big plan and make their shared dream come true. They also added that they were sure of not failing because they had learned from the mistakes of their role model and would be better than Attila Ambrus once was.
The juveniles investigated the town two times to find a potential target for their plan. They also
planned to borrow an air rifle without a maintenance permit, from one of their acquaintances, to carry out the crime.
After finishing their investigation for the potential spots, on the evening of August 25, the two boys decided to put on disguises, planning to take it off while fleeing, as well as taking their air rifle with them hidden in a case, for deceiving their chasers. The robbers showed up around 2 am at the Hatvan Street tobacco shop, but to their misfortune, the shop was filled with people, so they had to move on. Around 6:30 they seemed to finally find their target, a tobacco shop at the edge of Dózsa György Street.
The 18-year-old boy went into the store,
threatened the seller with the look-alike firearm air rifle and demanded money. During the robbery, his accomplice stayed in front of the store to remain on guard. As a result of the threat, the saleswoman took out 54 thousand forints from the box office and handed it to the young criminal. Before leaving the scene, the robber took three more boxes of cigarettes and then fled the place with his friend.
Running away, the two young men took off their disguises, just as they planned, and took a taxi straight to the bus station where they got on a bus going to Miskolc.
During the verdict, Judge Sal Ildikó declared that although armed robbery is punishable by penitentiary imprisonment,
the court will apply less strict enforcement in the case of these young adults. In this case, the educational purpose of punishment may be more effectively achieved by a lower degree of imprisonment. The verdict is not final yet: the prosecution appealed for aggravation, while the perpetrators and their defenders appealed for reduction.
