Sexual harassment of Hungarian priest revealed on Facebook
One of the priests from the Archdiocese of Kalocsa stated in a public Facebook post that his predecessor, Balázs Bábel, and other members of the church knew about sexual harassment but did nothing to report the harasser, another priest from the same Archdiocese.
444 reported that Dániel KÅ‘hegyi, 18 years old then, wrote a letter to Bábel in 2010 about being harassed by another member of the church who used his position and emphasised his power over the simple members of the establishment frequently. This year, KÅ‘hegyi revealed the whole letter on Facebook and another one as well, in which the sexual harasser priest expressed his infatuation with him.Â
The church was asked several questions, but the only answer reporters received was that the case was already followed through. The harasser resigned from his position but remained at the church.
Priests remained silent and did not intend to give any further details about the case. Their only request was to write about both sides in the articles, expressing the side of the writer of the letter and the answer the eighteen-year-old priest has sent. Journalists also offered the harasser a personal meeting, but he refused to attend.Â
In their answer, the church did not protect the priest after his act. The statement describes the sins of Bábel, and it’s consequences alongside with his professional life as a priest and his health status.

Sexual harassment and worse is nothing new in the Catholic Church, in fact it is rife. At least in the West, the church is finally admitting its sins, apologising for all the cover ups and paying the victims appropriate compensation. Unfortunately in many other places the church continues to sweep abuse under the carpet and there is a conspiracy of silence, or worse, blaming the victim.
