Attack against government servers highly organised, says chief security advisor
Budapest, April 3 (MTI) – The attacks against the government’s information technology systems have been highly organised, the prime minister’s chief domestic security advisor said late on Saturday.
The attackers have not been identified but the government’s databases are well protected, György Bakondi told public news channel M1.
The interior ministry said earlier on Saturday that the Hungarian government’s information technology network had been repeatedly attacked from foreign servers over the past 24 hours. The attacks were in several waves and in the range of thousands. The government has taken the necessary measures and will continue to make every effort to protect the network from attackers, the ministry said.
Parliament’s national security committee will discuss the attack during next Wednesday’s meeting, the head of the committee said on Sunday. The interior ministry and the national cybersecurity institution will be asked to provide information about details of the attacks and the counter-measures taken, said Zsolt Molnar.
Internet expert Zoltán Ormos told M1 on Sunday that such attacks, which involve overloading the server remotely in order to make it slow down or become inaccessible, cannot be used to acquire data. It is a simple procedure that probably served only propaganda purposes, he added.
