4 exciting places to visit near Lake Balaton – PHOTOS
If you are an active traveller and want to see more interesting things near the northern coast of Lake Balaton, we got some tips for you.
The Tapolca Lake Cave
The lake cave below the town of Tapolca was discovered in 1903 during an excavation. In the new, modern reception building, we can get to know the exciting world of caves in an interactive exhibition, and then walk down some stairs to go through most of the cave in a boat.
Once you are in Tapolca, be sure to visit the uniquely beautiful Malom Lake, 5 minutes from the caves, with its old, huge wheeled watermill. The building is currently home to Hotel Gabriella.
On the lakeshore, there are different restaurants, and in the summer, there is also a stage on the lake, with mainly musical programs.
The Castle of Sümeg and the knight’s tournament
Sümeg Castle is one of the most beautiful medieval fortresses in the country. In defiance of the vicissitudes of history, it still offers an impressive sight as it dominates its surroundings from a high-rise hilltop in the middle of the village of Sümeg. The oldest part of the castle was built in the 1260s, then it was expanded over the centuries.
The arena at the bottom of the castle hosts a historical program with knights and horses every Wednesday and Saturday. In doing so, a Spanish carousel and a Mongolian group of stuntmen will entertain the audience, showcase contemporary weapons, and perform a knightly tournament.
The Castle of Szigliget
The most spectacular castle near Lake Balaton is the Castle of Szigliget, located on a lonely cliff on the shores of Lake Balaton. The bastions offer a breathtaking view of the lake. The castle was built between 1260 and 1262 by the Abbey of Pannonhalma, later becoming a royal estate.
Walking down from the castle, you will find yourself at the Castle Café where you can taste really special, traditional ice cream. These are all sorbets: they contain no dairy products, and half of their ingredients are fruit. The ice creams are freshly prepared every day, and in addition to the more common flavours, you can also find specialities such as salty flavours, hazelnuts, almonds, or salted caramel.
Sárvár Bath and Adventure Park
If you still want to be near water but you would prefer some more excitement, the Sárvár Wellness Bath is the perfect choice. In addition to the thermal pools, sauna, and spa, the Sárvár Bath awaits visitors with a huge outdoor beach, with giant slides, various sports fields, games, and animation programs.
Right next to the beach, there is also an adventure park where visitors can enjoy exciting programs for all ages. You can try out high rope courses, archery, a treasure hunt, or airgun shooting.
