Young university student set fire to a church in Gödöllő!

The police finally caught the perpetrator of a vandal crime committed in Gödöllő in March, when a local church was set on fire. However, nobody knows why he wanted to burn down the Greek-Catholic church in the city not far from Budapest.

According to blikk.hu, locals acted as one after a young man set fire to one of the churches of Gödöllő. First, he smashed the door with an axe. Then, he poured oil on the benches and set the benches on fire.

Afterwards, he poured a white liquid on the iconostasis, then left since the alarm turned on.

According to the police, the damage done by him in March was worth HUF 2.5 million, magyarkurir.hu reported. One week later, the authorities caught Róbert Cs., a 28-year-old local Hungarian. Thanks to donations, all the damage could be repaired in the church. János Sivadó, the priest of the church, added that the unity in the city regarding the issue was astonishing. They could even improve the church’s security by putting armoured doors on the vestry and the main entrance doors. Moreover, they could buy CCTV cameras, taking better footage both indoors and outdoors.

After the police caught the perpetrator, they found the axe and the oil in his apartment.

At first, he was talkative during the house search, but then he had to be handcuffed because he threatened the officers. Afterwards, he scolded the police, provoked and continued to threaten them.

Based on the information of Blikk, the man is in pre-trial detention, so the priest was not able to learn why Róbert committed the vandal crime against the church building. However, the acquaintances of the perpetrator said that the university student was not anti-Christian, so that cannot be a cause.

In March, János Sivadó said that what happened was an anti-Christian act. There were no signs of the attack, the priest did not receive a threatening letter, and he did not know about any enemies either. The Greek-Catholic local community of approximately 300 built the church in 2012, blikk.hu reported.
