The renovation works of Blaha Lujza Square have reached a new phase, as a result of which the busy public space in Budapest’s city centre can be reached again by car, bicycle and public transport. Here are the new design plans for the green Blaha Lujza Square.

The complete renovation of Blaha Lujza Square started in mid-July and will last until the end of 2022. The good news is that underpass insulation works with greater traffic restrictions at the intersection of RΓ‘kΓ³czi Avenue and Grand Boulevard have been completed, so those travelling by car will be able to use the junction again with expanded traffic capacity from 18 September.

The expanded lane capacity includes two traffic lanes and one bus lane on RΓ‘kΓ³czi Avenue and two lanes on Grand Boulevard in every direction.

In connection with this, significant changes will be introduced in inner Elizabeth Town. From Monday, the traffic calming pilot project will come into force, as a result of which those travelling by car will not be able to cross the entire length between WesselΓ©nyi Street and DohΓ‘ny Street between the Small and Grand Boulevards.

According to the statement of the Centre for Budapest Transport (BKK), following the lifting of the current traffic restriction at the junction and its immediate surroundings, further restrictions can only be expected by the end of November, during the autumn break. This is when the layer of the pavement at the junction will be fully completed.
