Reconstruction of Budapest’s Blaha Lujza Square to begin on Monday

A comprehensive revamp of downtown Blaha Lujza Square will begin on Monday with traffic restrictions in place for 10 to 12 weeks, the cabinet chief of the mayor of Budapest said on Wednesday.

Car traffic at the junction of Rákóczi Avenue and the Grand Boulevard will be restricted to one lane in both directions during the 12-week period, Samu Balogh told a press conference. The bicycle lane will be scrapped in the construction area, and pedestrian traffic at the square will also be restricted, he said.

Traffic restrictions will not affect the operation of tram lines 4 and 6, he added.

He noted that the new municipal government had redesigned previous plans of the square’s upgrade to include larger green areas with altogether 70 trees. It will be fully accessible with a wheelchair and will include a public restroom, he said.

Meanwhile, László Horváth, manager of the project’s implementation at Budapest public transport company BKK, told an informal roundtable discussion that the cost of the revamp totals at 3.47 billion forints (EUR 9.8m).

The reconstruction is slated to end in late 2022.
