Discover Hungary’s abandoned secrets through these VIDEOS!
Hungary, and especially its capital, are jam-packed with beautiful buildings and tourist attractions, but there are a few buildings that remain hidden for most tourists. Yet these abandoned buildings are worth exploring, and for your convenience, Walking Architect recorded them on video.
In this article, you can take a look at a few abandoned buildings in Hungary that hide more than you would expect after the first glance, all from the comfort of your home.
Tőzsdepalota – Exchange Palace
The Exchange Palace is located on Liberty Square, which “is the heart of the Central Business District of Budapest. The Exchange Palace shares the square with the National Bank of Hungary and the US Embassy and is close to the Parliament and the Danube River,” says its website.
According to other sources, the building was built over a hundred years ago, between 1902 and 1907, and its architect was Ignác Alpár. At the time of its construction, it was one of the largest buildings in Europe. The building has been abandoned since 2009, although its reconstruction started in 2018, with a promise of finishing it by 2020. As you will see in the video, the building is still mostly abandoned.
The most interesting part that Walking Architect highlighted is the fact that several scenes of Blade Runner 2049 were recorded in this building. Check out the video for the exact scenes:
Gellért Hotel
Although technically not an abandoned building, you might be aware that after December 1st, Gellért Hotel will close down and not take guests until March 2022. The building will undergo a major renovation but will hopefully keep its atmosphere and style. If you would like to know more about its closing and renovation, read THIS article.
This building is on the list not because it is abandoned, but because of Walking Architect, you can have a tour in the building’s spooky underbelly not seen by average guests.

Gellért Hotel has a secret not known by many. It has a tunnel underneath, connecting it to the Rudas and the Rác Baths. If you would like to know why the tunnel is there or you are curious about the underground attractions of Budapest, THIS article is a must for you.
Unfinished Hilton Hotel Visegrád
This building, evoking Jurassic Park III’s abandoned research complex vibes, might eventually come back from the dead, so this might be your last time seeing the hotel abandoned.
The project’s new name is The Buda Resort and, according to the website of famous designer Johannes Torpe, the “derelict concrete construction lying dormant since the early 2000s and built on an old stone quarry is reimagined by Johannes Torpe Studios around its unique location into a luxury spa and wellness resort with 210 rooms.”
Check out the video of the abandoned building and then imagine yourself relaxing in the thermal bath redesigned by the famous Danish designer.

Halál alagút – Tunnel of Death
The tunnel nicknamed by people the Tunnel of Death is a 185-metre-long pedestrian underpass connecting Bajzs and Bulcsú Street. The tunnel is full of graffiti, and it is overall in a really bad shape, not to mention the areas around the openings.
Hopefully, this video is the last time you will see it in such bad condition, as its renovation is expected to be finished this November.
