The key to Hungary’s future is that people have understood that it is through work that they can succeed in life, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in an interview with daily Magyar Nemzet on Friday.
All government measures introduced in the past 12 years have been aimed at making Hungarians develop trust and form a national consensus about the importance and fruitfulness of work, he said. Orbán said that vaccination against the coronavirus was not yet an option last Christmas but vaccines were now accessible to all.
He added that “vaccination can now give protection and also hope that instead of idly waiting for problems to pass, we can actively make a change in our own interest and in others’ interest”. “Unfortunately,
He added that “vaccination can now give protection and also hope that instead of idly waiting for problems to pass, we can actively make a change in our own interest and in others’ interest”. “Unfortunately,
the number of people who refuse to get vaccinated is much higher than I had hoped for,”
he said. “At the same time, it is a great success that more than three million people have taken their booster shots, which puts Hungary among the best in Europe,” he added. The situation was the same in the case of first and second shots, he said.
Commenting on the situation in Europe, he said “it is always before the last, victorious attack that we get most tired”. “Stamina and fresh energy can return from victory and this will apply in the case of Hungarians and also the Poles,” he said. “We must not give up the fight, even if we get tired.”
Orbán said that those currently in power in Brussels wanted a
German-controlled European state, “unlike us, who insist on the existence of nation states making up Europe”.
“Additionally, an increasing number of positions in the EU are taken over by politicians and Brussels bureaucrats who have certain ideals about the world, society and humans,” Orbán said. He said the first appearance of this approach was represented by “Homo sovieticus”, referring to conformists during the time of the Soviet Union. They “wanted to make everyone forget the two-thousand-year endeavour for a Christ-like man, they considered respect for parents and family outdated junk, insisted that children should be raised only to promote the party and the class struggle, and that life exists only in the material world, without a spirit”.
Orbán said current ideals promoted in Brussels were “not far from this”, with bureaucrats wanting to transform societies.
“They see migration as a way to resolve demographic problems and they believe that European Christian children can be replaced with Muslim adults,” he said. “However, the reality is that instead of a happy mix, the result is terrorism, crime, unemployment and no-go zones.”
Orbán said the same applied to families. “They believe that our family ideals are outdated and oppressive and they insist that in line with a progressive approach, children should wear trousers for six months and skirts for another six months,” he said. “The people they want to involve in raising children are people we want to keep away from children.”
Hungary and Poland reject these ideals
and “we bear great responsibility because we understand that these two countries don’t just represent their own citizens but also those millions of Europeans who are forced to keep their opinions to themselves in their home countries,” Orbán said.

He also said that Brussels’ revenues were insignificant, arguing that “they only have money from us, from the payments made by member states”. He said there were political accusations against Hungary in Brussels but they lacked any truth. Hungary will “certainly receive” all the EU money that the country is entitled to because “Brussels has no room for manoeuvre in this”.
Citing the government’s National Consultation surveys, he said there was no other country in the EU where the opinions of many millions of citizens were taken into consideration for making government decisions, like it had happened in Hungary. He said the main tasks of 2022 were the implementation of large economic measures, further successful protection against the virus and the referendum on protecting children.
He added that he wanted all Hungarians to realise that the country was pressing ahead and not reversing.

While I disagree with the fear-mongering and prejudice. I have to also admit that Hungary hasn’t suffered from terrorism unlike England, France, and Germany. The poor integration of migrants due to the silly idealism from countries like Sweden and Germany has only led to terrorism (both from the far-right and Islamists). Hungary is right to be wary and secure its borders, but it shouldn’t also preach intolerance.
Children are children,mr.orban, regardless of passport and family religion. And adults are adults, with same rights and human rights protected by international laws that your country too signed.
Even at Christmas, this evil politician can not refrain from using divisive words of discrimination and hate. And he dares calling himself a Christian. Shame. He really has got no clue about what Christmas and Christianity mean.
The man is clearly taking some very strong LSD. There is no other explanation for this ‘Alice in Wonderland’ convoluted logic. It is his regime that is trying to change society through measures the Spanish Inquisition might approve of. Before his attempts to shore up his electoral support through increasingly repressive measures, there was no dispute with the EU and Hungarians were happy. The same goes for the Polish far right government. Both nations are heavily borrowing on tricks used by the communists and using them in a far right context.
The national consultation surveys aren’t worth the paper they’re written on. The questions for Hungarians are worded in such a way that the government knows the answers will always be in their favour. However, the questions they presented to Brussels were worded differently. But that’s how politics work.
He’s also managed to insult two million Bosnian Muslims by saying it would be difficult to integrate Bosnia into the EU, although they have always lived there and they consider themselves Europeans. ‘Shameful and rude’ was the news article’s heading.
Fidesz hides behind the slogan ‘promoting Christian values’. You should practice what you preach and this government doesn’t do that. Far too much propaganda and instilling fear, but as much of the media is state controlled then not surprising, outside news agencies tell a different story.
@Put Simply: “there was no dispute with the EU and Hungarians were happy.”
What? Are you forgetting about the 2006 protests. If so, you must be quite dense if you think Hungarians were happy before the current Hungarian government.
Disclaimer, you don’t need to like Fidesz to realize that Hungarians were not exactly happy before Fidesz got into power.
@Mario
“And adults are adults, with same rights and human rights…”
What rights would that be for Muslims, to kill millions of French citizens like what former Malaysian leader Mahathir said?
“…using divisive words of discrimination and hate…. really has got no clue about what Christmas and Christianity mean.”
In the Bible, Jesus (the founder of Christianity) was unashamedly divisive (Matthew 10:34-39, Luke 12:49-53, John 7:43). He also prioritised helping his own people first (Matthew 10:5-6, 15:24) and said it is not right to take the children’s bread (meaning help to your own people) and give it to dogs (meaning foreigners) (Matthew 15:26). I think Mario may be the clueless one.
@Mel
“Fidesz hides behind the slogan ‘promoting Christian values’. You should practice what you preach…”
Let’ see, Jesus the founder of Christianity, state He is the only way, the truth and the life (John 14:6, 17:3) and his early followers affirm that there is no other saviour (Acts 4:12). This naturally excludes all other non-Christians (people of other religions, atheists etc) and the ultimate fate of non-Christians is to be condemned to be tormented eternally in a lake of fire (John 3:17, Revelations 21:8).
@The Realist: I was talking about Hungarians being happy with the EU. The 2006 protests were not about the relationship with the EU.
@Put Simply. Fair enough. Although, I don’t think Hungarians are happy with the EU stance on immigration or else the opposition in Hungary wouldn’t have agreed that Hungary needs to have a strong border security.
I will admit that is a a separate issue.
