5 mesmerising places you need to visit in Hungary this winter
Hungary is a beautiful place, full of sights worth seeing for tourists and locals alike. This is true for winter as well as for summer: snow-covered Hungary is something you do not see every day. We have collected some places you should put on your bucket list for the remaining of this winter.
Miskolctapolca
According to the town’s official site, Miskolctapolca is a typical resort town with hotels, restaurants, and spas, less than five kilometres from the centre of Miskolc. Its charm is mainly due to the natural beauty of the eastern part of the Bükk Mountains. The flora of the mountain and the climate created by the thermal springs in the area offer a unique healing and relaxing experience one should definitely not miss out on. As you can see in Csodahelyek.hu’s Facebook post above, one of their readers photographed the town recently. The snow and the sunshine give these places an unforgettable atmosphere.
Kőkapu, Zemplén Mountains
Even though the Vadászkastély (Hunting Mansion) cannot be visited due to its functioning as a hotel, we can go up to its terrace where this beautiful view welcomes us. The lake we can see from up there is called the Áfonyás-tó (Lake Blueberry). However, if you want to book a room in Kőkapu Hotel, that is also entirely possible. Check out their official website for more information. The hotel has “23 rooms equipped with all of the weekday’s convenience and awaiting all those who want to escape from the city’s noise and have romantic forest walks.”
Hímváró Lookout Tower, Boldogkőújfalu, Zemplén Mountains
Another magnificent place in the Zemplén Mountains. In the pictures above, the photographer captured a beautiful sunrise at the lookout tower. The tower is a part of Sima, a village with as few as 30 people. If you wish to visit a place where you can be all by yourself while enjoying the miracles of nature, this is the perfect choice. Go on a hike alone, with a loved one, or your whole family, this place will creep into your heart without a doubt.
Hidasi Valley, East Mecsek
As Természetjáró put it, “In the two stream valleys of the East Mecsek, we can follow waterfalls, gushing streams, and springs. From Hidasi Valley, we can climb up to Pusztabánya, where we can learn about the history of glassmaking.
The wild Takanyó gorge, surrounded by steep banks, and the lush meadows of the Mecsek crown our excursion.”
Hidasi Valley is a place that is frequently visited by hikers. It is a part of the East Mecsek Landscape Protection Area and is a highly protected place.
Hortobágy
No “most beautiful places to visit in Hungary” list is complete without the Alföld (the Great Hungarian Plain), an area that takes up 55% of the country. Hortobágy is one of the most widely known parts of Alföld. It is famous for its flora and fauna, the River Tisza, the Hortobágy National Park, and the Nine-arched Bridge, among others. Hortobágy is just as fascinating in the winter as it is during any other time of the year.
