Here’s what you can do at Lake Balaton in winter

lake balaton winter

Balaton season is all year round and here’s a list of activities to prove it.

Everybody knows that once summer arrives to Hungary, Balaton season commences. We’re here to tell you, they are wrong. According to magyarorszagom.hu, there are tons of activities that don’t require a swimsuit and which you can do anytime, even in winter. No matter the weather, the Hungarian sea is always open to visitors!

Wine and dine

There are countless vineyards and excellent restaurants around the lake. It would be a shame to think that these can only be enjoyed in the summertime. Restaurants in this region are known for using local ingredients. It’s not a proper meal from the Balaton region unless it’s with a good wine. Luckily, the hills around the Hungarian sea are abound with vineyards from which fantastic wines are made. You can test the local wines at the Keszthely Bormustra on the 2nd of December.

vineyard balaton

Now that the weather is turning colder, there’s nothing better to warm the hands and soul than mulled wine. The XIII. Mulled Wine Brewing Festival in Tihany is on the 9th of December and is the perfect place to try some exquisite mulled wines and get warmer in the cold months.

The Koloska valley wildlife park awaits!

Even if it’s not one of the most well-known wild life parks in our country it’s a nice break from the everyday bustle of the weekdays. A calming getaway, here you can enjoy the winter weather with the forest creatures. See how the deers and stags get through the colder months!

Canoe at Hévíz

Canoeing is one of the most typical summer sports, but not in Hévíz. Here, thanks to the thermal waters, the water is warm even in the wintertime. You can enjoy a nice canoe ride on an almost 10-kilometer-long section of the stream.

Visit Veszprém

When you don’t mind a little travelling, you should most definitely visit the city of Veszprém. Here, you can check out the zoo, have a nice meal in one of the top-notch restaurants or see some installations in one of Veszprém’s museums. Especially before the holidays, when the Christmas market opens, the city is dashing. Read more about programs in Veszprém HERE.

Balaton winter Veszprém

Christmas markets around the lake

If you manage to get to the region before Christmas, you have to check out the Christmas markets. These, especially around the Balaton, have wonderful chimey cake (kürtőskalács) and, as mentioned earlier, mulled wine. There are some bigger highlights like Veszprém and Siófok, and there are some smaller scale fairs as well, such as the Folly Arboretum, which holds their annual Advent Market. Here, the stalls sell almost anything that one could possibly think of.

New Year’s Eve by the Hungarian sea

New Year’s Eve is a lovely experience no matter the location, why not make the environment lovely too? There are tons of guesthouses that are perfect for a more private celebration of the coming year. Be sure to register as soon as you can, because the places are most likely to fill up rapidly as the holidays approach.

Participate in living tradition at Szigliget

The township welcomes the new year with a striking tradition. The people of Szigliget take a “New year’s dip” on the first day of the year. This actually means a plunge into the icy waters of the Balaton, believed to be an excellent remedy to a rough night. If you don’t need a remedy, Szigliget is still worthy of a visit with its gorgeous castle and dashing view of the lake.

Wander and wonder

Balaton in the winter

The Balaton region is absolutely stunning, no matter where you look at it from. However, if you want to avoid the crowds while hiking, you should most definitely visit the village of Mindszentkálla. From here, the breathtaking view from Kopasz Hill is only a short hike away.

Skating

We’re talking about a lake after all, and we can’t leave out one of the most important activities. Every January, they organise the Slip through Balaton event, the winter version of the annual summer event of Swim through Balaton. While the winter version doesn’t have swimming, it does have plenty of ice and skating. Until the Balaton freezes over, there are other places to get in shape for the Slip, such as Szigliget and Siófok.

There are many other fun activities to do, you can read more about these HERE.

PHOTOS: Lumina Park reopened, Budapest’s past is shining at Palatinus

Budapest Lumina Park

The Lumina Park welcomes guests back with a shimmering replica of the Chain Bridge, the underground metro made of string lights, the Golden Team and the Paul Street Boys and many more sights!

The theme this year is based on the 150th birthday of Budapest. In honour of this momentous event, the frame for the lightpark is timetravel. You can walk through the most well-known historical phases of the city surrounded by magical lights.

The Lumina Park will be on display until 4th of March on the Palatinus Beach.

Source: FB

The story of Lumina Park started last year with the intention of attracting guests to the Margret Island in the colder winter months. The Budapest Spa and Thermal Baths Plc. (BGYH) was looking to balance the summer and winter months and found the solution together with the polish company Lumina sp. z o.o. This company was already operating lightparks in several Polish cities, and was planning to expand. Budapest, more specifically the Palatinus, turned out to be the perfect spot for a new lightpark.

Read more about last year’s exhibition HERE.

“With Lumina Park, we created Budapest’s winter attraction last year, which was a hit with both residents and tourists. We concluded the season with more than 200,000 visitors,”

Ildikó Borosné Szűts, CEO of  Budapest Spa and Thermal Baths Plc., commented on the ceremonial opening of the second Lumina Park.

Gergely Karácsony was also among the attendees of said opening event. He stated that unlike last year (when the energy crisis was at its peak), the Christmas lights will be installed again this year.

Krzysztof Sachs, creative director of the Lumina company, said that every lightpark has a unique theme, so they were open to the idea of a park inspired by the history of Budapest. In his words, the final result was not only spectacular but also educational with a touch of nostalgia.

At the entrance gate, after walking under a clock going backwards, we can see legionaries. This nod towards Aquincum and the Romans precedes the “time labyrinth” which takes us forward into the nineteenth century. Here, we can marvel at a garden “dancing” to operetta hits and even an underground metro rumbling along the Andrássy Avenue.

We can enjoy the spectacle of the iconic symbols of Budapest: the Chain Bridge with its lions and the dazzling Parliament.

The walk continues from here to the 1950s and to the era of rock and disco. We can see installations of the Golden Team, the Paul Street Boys and among others, some period specific cars, like the Trabant and the Zaporozhet.

After this trip to the past, we arrive to present-day Budapest. In the end we can even catch a glimpse of the future, where everything will be controlled by robots.

A great feature of the lightpark are its many interactive parts. You can board most vehicles or beat the drums.

The “time travel” takes about one and a half hour. The Lumina Park is open from sundown to 9 pm everyday until the 4th of March.

According to the BGYH, this year, the Lumina Christmas Park will also open its gates between 10 November and 15 January. During this time, the Lumina Christmas Park will be held in the park of Római fürdő ensuring a proper Christmas atmosphere.

The Budapest spa establishment has signed a three-year agreement with the Polish Lumina company. This means we can be sure that next year, there will be a Lumina Park to enjoy for residents and tourists alike.

Shop at the farmers’ market

On your next stop, make your way to the Kecskemét farmers’ market to immerse yourself in the local food scene. Are you clueless about where to eat after a long day of sightseeing in Hungary? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Based on Tripadvisor’s “Traveler’s Choice Best of the Best Restaurant Awards 2023”, we’ll tell you which three restaurants you must try when visiting our country. However, there is no Hungarian meal without some sweet bites at the end. TasteAtlas has named not one but two “Legendary Dessert Places” in Hungary, which people with a sweet tooth can’t miss during their Budapest vacation. So without further ado, let’s check out the best desserts spots and restaurants in Hungary.

Best restaurants in Hungary

After a long day of exploring the beauties of Hungary, you have surely worked up an appetite. But the real question – more times than not – is not what to eat, instead where to eat. Especially, when you are an out-of-towner or come from abroad. That’s when Tripadvisor comes handy. The site gives countless recommendations based on more than 8 million ratings. Everyone can find something to their liking. In the “Fine Dining” category, the Strand Restaurant in Budapest made it to the 24th place on the list of Tripadvisor’s top fine dining recommendations. This sophisticated restaurant serves avant-garde local dishes and boasts two Michelin stars. Therefore, it’s fair to say that the owners, Szabina Szulló and Tamás Széll did a pretty good job. In the “Hidden Gem” category, another restaurant from Budapest, MADHOUSE Bistro & Craft Beer Bar made it to the top places, precisely to  the 16th spot.

However, not only the capital boasts culinary treasures. The third restaurant, which stands on the 18th place on the list, is Csokonai Restaurant from Debrecen. When visiting Hungary, it is worth venturing outside of Budapest to discover the charming rural towns of the country. Who knows, maybe you’ll stumble upon some hidden gems.

For hungry travellers with a sweet tooth

If you still have some room for dessert after a scrumptious, well-deserved meal in one of the top restaurants in Hungary, don’t hold back! We all know that calories don’t count during vacation as they all go to the heart instead of the stomach. But here comes the question: where are the best dessert spots in Hungary? Based on the global list of TasteAtlas, there are two Hungarian dessert spots that deserved to be included in the “150 Most Legendary Dessert Places”. Both places are located in Budapest, so if you don’t have a lot of free time on your hands to explore the Hungarian countryside, you don’t have to go too far. The famed Daubner Confectionery made it to the 14th place on the list of TasteAtlas, thanks to its divine Dobos cake. Apart from being an official Hungarikum, this truly authentic Hungarian dessert also has a fascinating history, which you may read about HERE. TasteAtlas described this sweet treat as a “perfect balance of flavours and textures, faithfully following the traditional recipe”. It certainly is worth a try.

The other top Hungarian dessert spot, New York Café, got the 32nd place on the list of TasteAtlas for its signature New York chocolate cake, which is “not just a dessert but a sensory indulgence”, according to the portal. Despite its confusing name, New York Café is also in Budapest. It was founded a few years earlier than the previously mentioned Daubner Confectionery, over a century ago, and it is often referred to as “the most beautiful café in the world”. It’s not only a dessert shop but a place that oozes culture, a true hideaway to write, read and reflect.

However, there are countless other wonderful gastro spots in Hungary the two portals didn’t mention. If you don’t mind wandering off the beaten path, you’ll discover many equally amazing places in Hungary likes the ones we mentioned in here.

Charming Hungarian castle close to Lake Balaton awaits tourists

castle of Sümeg

The Castle of Sümeg is situated atop a mountain, just a couple kilometres away from Lake Balaton. It is one of the most significant tourist attractions of the ‘Hungarian sea’. The charming castle has been renovated and now the unique atmosphere and the special exhibitions await visitors.

The history of the Castle of Sümeg

The one-of-a-kind Castle of Sümeg was built in the late 13th century by Béla IV of Hungary. The castle was a hideaway for the king during the Mongolian invasion. The shape of the castle changed significantly over the years. In response to the Ottoman wars in Hungary, the castle was fortified to serve as a major frontier fortress. Now, it has a unique irregular shape, two towers and is about 125 metres long and 80 metres wide. The Sümeg Castle is one of the most well-preserved castles of Hungary.

The renovation process

As turizmus.com reported, the castle went through a lot of changes lately. As the castle was one of the most important strategic and military points of the country for a long time, it was kept in good condition. In the 18th century, the fortress became deserted and there was no one to take care of it. During this time, its condition deteriorated. However, in the 20th century, there were initiatives to restore the building to its original beauty.

The real breakthrough came in the 21st century, when its renovation finished in the framework of the National Castle Program, in cooperation with the National Heritage Protection Development Non-profit Ltd (NÖF), using EU funding. The ultimate goal of this restoration was to show the castle in its most complete period, the late 17th century. The previously available services have been significantly expanded and are now awaiting visitors, providing the same high standard programs and tours.

The new exhibition

In designing the exhibition, it was particularly important to show the everyday life of the people once living within the walls of the castle in a spectacular, experiential way. Therefore, the restored ground floor spaces feature contemporary presentation of the castle’s 16th century rooms. For example, the baker’s home and workspace, the cook’s home and a Renaissance kitchen equipped with tools typical of the period.

Visitors can even try on period clothes and take pictures at the selfie points. The upstairs area offers a modern experience to tourists, a minimalist 21st century exhibition. Visitors can explore spectacular models, graphics, theoretical 3D reconstructions. In addition to that, there are short films playing in the rooms, presenting the history of the fortress. Tourist that are up for a small game can experience the thrill of discovering the finds hidden beneath the surface: there is an interactive archaeological game projected on the floor of the room.

Budapest’s famous tourist attraction becomes a paid destination

Halászbástya Fisherman's Bastion Budapest

One of the most beautiful buildings in Hungary, one of the most popular tourist attractions in Budapest, will start to have a paid entrance on 16 March.

From 16 March to 23 December 2023, an entrance fee will be charged when visiting the upper observation deck of the Fisherman’s Bastion, the official magazine of Budapest, Énbudapestem, has learned from the I. district administration.

The ticket prices

The full price ticket is HUF 1200, the discounted ticket, which is available to children under 14 years of age, students with student ID and retired citizens of Hungary and the European Union, will be 600 HUF.

Winter in Budapest: Normafa snowsports, new Light Curtain Tram

Now that the energy crisis has closed many of the indoor facilities for the winter months, Budapest offers a great opportunity for free-time activities: outdoor sports such as sledging and cross-country skiing in Normafa and riding the Light Curtain Tram.

Taking advantage of the snowfall

Normafa awaits visitors with snow suitable for sports. For those who want to go sledging or cross-country skiing, this is a great opportunity. The snow-covered parts are free of charge, but in the future, the skiing trail near the chapel of St. Anna will be subject to a fee. The ticket will include changing and showering facilities in addition to the maintained and lit trail in the evening, said the Municipality of Hegyvidék.

The Anna Field sledge trail, located under the popular playground, will continue to be free of charge. Unfortunately, the downhill ski trail is not yet open this year, but we hope that it will be renovated in the next few years and will be open to skiers all season long.

Here are some additional photos of the sledge and skiing trail:

Attractions in the Hegyvidék include the Elisabeth Lookout on János Hill, the highest point in Budapest, as well as the Glider, the Cogwheel and the Children’s Railway. Visitors can also visit the Advent fair of Hegyvidék, ending on 23 December.

Winter Light Curtain Tram for the energy friendly

Instead of BKV’s popular Light Tram, this time, a more modest vehicle decorated with a light curtain will be operating in Budapest during the festive season. Between 16 December 2022 and 8 January 2023, the Light Curtain Tram will be on tram line 2 on weekdays and on other lines at weekends.

Light trams have been lighting up the capital during the festive season since 2009, but this year is different: the energy crisis has focused BKV’s attention on more conscious solutions. With the Light Curtain Tram, an energy-efficient yet festively lighted vehicle will be running in Budapest again this year. A KCSV-7 vehicle has been chosen to convert kinetic energy into electrical energy, which is then circulated back into the system and battery so that the light curtain falling from the top of the vehicle can be lit without using extra energy, wrote the Budapest Transport Centre, BKK.hu.

5 interesting facts you didn’t know about Budapest’s attractions!

budapest

Budapest and its famous sights have been the subject of millions of photos, Facebook posts and blog entries, and deservedly so. One would think we know everything owing to our class trip in elementary school and we only show off the city’s great classics to our foreign friends. However, the tourist magnets still have some surprises.

Divers are searching under the city centre

Margaret Island Margit-sziget 4

A few hundred metres from Margaret Island, in the heart of a densely populated district, there is an underwater cave. It can only be accessed by divers with special permit. It has not been fully explored by today, although János Molnár, the apothecary after whom the cave is named, already assumed in the 1860 after analysing the water of the Buda springs, that the caverns in the side of the mountain concealed a sizeable underwater cave system.

The already explored stretch of the cave is 5.5 km long and has a depth of 80 metres below the water level. Its water is fed by both thermal water from the deep and cold karst water from Buda. The processes that form the thermal cavescan still be studied today. The cave contains the world’s largest thermal water chamber with a height (or depth?) of 20-25 metres.

The Zoo is also a nature conservation area

Budapest zoo main gate
Budapest Zoo main gate source: zoobudapest.com

One of the main tourist attractions, the Zoo is not only one of Europe’s oldest zoos, dating back to 1866, but also a nature conservation area. The first recorded plant is a Canadian poplar from 1910 (next to the South America Run), but in total there are 60 protected plant species alongside the animals. The National Bonsai Collection is also located here. The total notional value of the zoo’s protected plant collection exceeds half a billion forints.

The construction of the Basilica even gave rise to a saying

budapest st stephen basilica

If you walk towards the Basilica from the direction of the Opera House, you may notice thatthe church has its back to Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Street. The main entrance opens onto a much less busy square, not to mention the surrounding streets where there is not enough room for tourists during the peak season. Why?

Starting from the foundation stone in 1851 to its consecration in 1905, the Basilica was built for over 50 years. This is the period when Pest-Buda became a metropolis. The population grew by leaps and bounds, palaces and boulevards mushroomed. The pace of this growth can be measured by the fact that by the time the church was finished, it was practically located in a different city, with new centres and emphases. Budapest was built that much faster than the Basilica.

Of course, it did not help that, due to structural and material defects, the half-finished building collapsed in 1868, andthree years were spent only to clean up the ruins. In any case, if a person borrowed money from someone else at the time and said, “I will pay you back when the Basilica is built”, the lender could not expect much good to come of it because by then it meant never. But finally, in 1905, the church was duly inaugurated and consecrated – although rumour has it that Franz Joseph was somewhat anxiously scanning the ceiling during the ceremony.

Some of the statues in Heroes’ Square have been replaced

budapest heroes square
pixabay.com

Not because they were blown up during the siege, according to the good Eastern European custom, but because in the meantime we have rewritten our history, according to the good Hungarian custom. It all started, of course, with the Millennium celebrations, when the decision was made that a national pantheon was needed to be created here. In comparison, the two colonnades with the statues of the kings were not completed until 1911, and at that time it was the statues of the Habsburg monarchs that completed the line instead of the Transylvanian princes.

However, the end of World War One and the Monarchy, coupled with the Soviet Republic in 1919, did a lot to damage the monarchs’ popularity. The Habsburgs were first taken down – the statue of Franz Joseph was smashed – and then put back after the two world wars, although the new Franz Joseph statue was not replaced until 1926.

During the siege, it was this section that was hit by bombs. Rákosi’s regime wanted to demolish the whole thing, but in the end they replaced the Habsburgs with the Transylvanian princes fighting against the Habsburgs as well as Lajos Kossuth. That is why today, instead of Maria Theresa of religious and educational reform, the great of the nation is Imre Thököly, who fought as an ally of the Turks against the European armies that later liberated Buda…

The names of the former workers can also be found in the dome of the Parliament

Photo by Geio Tischler on Unsplash

With its impressive dimensions and radiance – and of course the crown – the Dome Hall of the Parliament is not the place where you would ever start looking for funny details. But they are there, just very hidden. It was not until the ribbed vault was re-gilded in the 1980s that it was noticed that the royal coats of arms at the base of the points of the stars were topped with names, such as those of the painter Manó Wilhelm from 1895 or the carpenter István Varga from 1949.

And some of the workers of the late party-state era painted their own portraits on the vaulted ceiling of the circular corridor around the Dome Hall, using a photo of the BKV public transport pass from the time. The frames of the SZTK (public health care) glasses of the time look quite funny among the fairy-tale creatures and garlands – a pity that a mere mortal can never enter with their binoculars there…

Nor can the world’s tallest toilets be accessed, which also open from this corridor, with their more than 8-metre-high ceilings. They were needed because only the central part was ready for the millennium celebrations, the side wings with their standard, boring toilets were not.

Ready for Europe’s biggest fireworks show?! – Programme guide for 18th-20th August

fireworks budapest

Budapest awaits its visitors between 18-21 August with special series of events to celebrate the founding of the Hungarian state. In addition to the traditional firework display on 20 August, family and children’s programmes, music concerts and traditional Hungarian flavours can be enjoyed in the Hungarian capital.

On the national day of the founding of the state, a four-day-long series of events will take place in the Hungarian capital this year as well. Let’s see what programmes we can attend if we visit Budapest between 18 and 21 August.

18 August

The first day of the programme series starts with a traditional Hungarian Tavern Festival (Csárdafesztivál) in Budapest’s 5th district. Within the framework of the event, the best taverns of the country will gather in the heart of the city centre, on Vörösmarty Square where visitors can enjoy the most popular Hungarian dishes, and get involved in the folklore atmosphere. In addition to folk dance performances, a special folk music festival will take place, combining classic and new traditions for both local and foreign visitors – reported by Programturizmus.com.

Additionally, the St. Stephen’s Day Retrospective Taban – in Budapest’s 1st district – will feature music concerts and performances by popular national and foreign musicians. Among the performers at Retro Tabán are some of the best rock stars of Hungary: Bill Gyula Deák, Feró Nagy and Beatrice, Tamás Hevesi, Ádám Török, Tamás Takács Dirty Blues Band and EDDA band. At the same time, the Road Movie Live at the Technological University’s quayside venue will feature Ivan & the Parazol, Kaukasus, Bohemian Betyars, Hiperkarma and Kelemen Kabátban, all of whom are of interest to younger audiences. At Szabadrét, the best DJs and electronic music will await visitors, while the Utcazene Festival (Street Music Festival) will feature mainly foreign artists.

19 August

On 19 August, the icons of rock and world-famous jazz legends will entertain the audience in Budapest’s 1st district. The Mandoki Soulmates await visitors with an unforgettable concert at Szentháromság Square.

20 August

The celebration on 20 August begins with the flag raising and the St. Stephen’s Day ceremony, followed by the air parade of the Hungarian Defense Forces. Visitors can also watch special military demonstrations and visit an exhibition on Kapistrán Square.

Fans of traditional military technology can admire the Pannonia, built in 1927, along with the iconic Golden Train, originally built in 1938. The Walk of Cities features a spectacular installation of the flags of 348 Hungarian cities, counties and 102 towns of historic Hungary, while the Sports Heroes programme features our nation’s iconic athletes.

The little ones can have fun in the Magic Grove in the City Park, while lovers of folk culture can enjoy the traditional Festival of Crafts. Classical music fans should visit Panorama Classical stage on Gellért Hill, while the Operetta Korzó on Vigadó Square will entertain the audience with special operetta pieces.

Visitors can also enjoy several specialties of Hungarian gastronomy at the Street of Hungarian Flavours, Csárdafesztivál (Tavern Festival) and the Food Truck Show.

This year, the Artists’ Garden will open its doors on Nehru Beach, offering unique musical performances, film screenings and interesting talks for lovers of literature and culture – reported by the Hungarian news portal Turizmus.com.

Following the success of last year’s event, the Fashion & Design Festival will be held again at the Bálna Budapest, where visitors can meet the most prestigious Hungarian designers, and can participate in handicraft workshops and sustainability programmes.

The highlight of this year’s St Stephen’s Day celebrations is the fireworks display on 20 August, the cost of which has already been reported previously. Europe’s biggest fireworks display will take place on the lower and upper quays of Buda and Pest.

21 August

On the last day of the programme series, visitors can travel backwards and forwards in time. They can jump into one of the 5 time capsules set up in the city centre of the Hungarian capital, where they can listen to famous historical figures giving them advice for the present, but also record their own video message for 2023 – reported by Szent István Nap.

Will decorative lighting disappear from Budapest?!

budapest_spice_of_europe

In order to reduce the “energy demand of Budapest”, the mayor might introduce a drastic new change in the Hungarian capital. Accordingly, the decorative lighting in Budapest might be shortened during the night. As a result, the Hungarian capital will turn dark at 10 or 11 pm from this summer. Is this measure really worth it in financial terms? Besides, what kind of impression it will give to tourists visiting Budapest?

According to Mayor Gergely Karácsony, “green and sustainability investments” in Hungary have lagged behind in the past decade, making the climate crisis even harder to deal with. In his post, he pointed out that Budapest had seen the second-largest increase in average temperatures among European cities in the past 50 years. The average temperature in Budapest is now 4 degrees higher than it was half a century ago. At the Budapest Energy Summit, four proposals were made, one of which was the shortening of decorative lightning in Budapest. According to the announcement, this measure „can bring substantial savings to the capital – the equivalent of four days’ worth of street lighting” – reported by Telex. As a result, the Hungarian capital will turn dark at 11 pm in the summer, and at 10 pm in the winter period.

We could spare the costs of four days’ worth of street lighting, or in other words 1% of the annual street lighting, by making Budapest look like a dark, dreary city. But is it really worth it?! As the Hungarian news portal Turizmus.com reports, we should also consider the fact that, apart from its usefulness, the decorative lighting is part of the capital’s image; so to speak, it is one of its attractions. The older generations might remember those dark days when this feature was not yet part of the Budapest skyline. Although the city’s administration could have covered the costs, they wanted to set an example of energy saving for the citizens.

It is no secret that the capital’s leaders are now being guided by a desire for exemplary austerity. They also want to make people aware of the importance of energy conservation with this measure. However, it is uncertain how the newly introduced regulation will influence the residents of Budapest or the tourists visiting the Hungarian capital. Due to the lack of decorative lights, the city’s attractiveness will considerably diminish at night. In fact, it might even affect the touristic success of the Hungarian capital.

According to Gergely Karácsony, „The city won’t go dark, but the lighting will finally be modern!”. Budapest’s Mayor also added that „by upgrading street lighting, the Hungarian capital can save a significant amount of energy, the equivalent of 130 days a year. And city dwellers will not notice any of this” – reported by Klubrádió. In addition to energy modernisation, transport investment and vehicle replacement to reduce energy and fuel consumption will continue, along with the promotion of energy independence. According to Gergely Karácsony, “it may sound overly ambitious, but it is absolutely feasible”. The government wants to achieve that by 2030 Budapest’s utilities would run on the energy the city produces. The mayor said that the energy supply of the capital’s utilities would “not depend on Russia, the government or energy companies” – reported by Mandiner.
