In view of the war in Ukraine, the government will propose expanding the types of special legal order enshrined in the constitution, the prime minister’s chief of staff said on Thursday.
The state of special legal order introduced as a result of the coronavirus epidemic will end on May 31, Gergely Gulyás told a regular press conference. In view of the war in Ukraine, it is important that the government should be able to
take swift action when necessary
and it will propose expanding the status of special legal order to include humanitarian catastrophe and war in a neighbouring country, he said. This option will hopefully not need to be used but the possibility needs to be there, he said.
Hungary will continue making every effort to restore peace as soon as possible but its influence is limited, he said. It is a realistic scenario that the war could last for months or even years, and the movement of troops shows that the fights could intensify for periods of time, he added.
So far, some 625,000 refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine have crossed to Hungary,
Gulyás said. Over 80 percent have already travelled on, and the number of those currently staying here is estimated at maximum 100,000, he said. The government aims to provide work or education to as many as possible, and as a first safe country, it will provide refuge, accommodation and food to those forced to flee their homes, he said.
Coronavirus case numbers in Hungary suggest that while the coronavirus pandemic has not disappeared, its intensity has diminished,
the prime minister’s chief of staff said on Thursday.
In the past 24 hours, 24 people died in Hungary of a coronavirus-related illness, and 3,041 new infections were registered, Gergely Gulyás told a regular press briefing. Meanwhile, the number of people needing intensive care has fallen to 1,500, 48 of whom are on a ventilator, he said.
The number of new infections still varies rather widely, showing the presence of the virus in the populace, Gulyas said, adding that elderly people and patients with pre-existing conditions are the most vulnerable groups.
According to portfolio.hu, the minister highlighted that there would be no more restrictions in the coming months.

Remember : those Citizens who at the recently held National Elections in Hungary, that voted for the return to office – the Fidesz Government, under the Prime Minister and Leader of the Fidesz Party – ownership, accountability and responsible – is Yours.
This article, and the jury remains out, as to it’s agenda which could be a hidden one, by this Government, is it needed ?
Is this another case of a Government, building its POWER over the Citizens of Hungary ?
Constitutional changes are part of this Governments rhetoric, that when looked at in depth, come back to this Government, taking tighter control and management – over the Citizens of Hungary.
We know, the undertaken stategy – that has been endemic – exhibited by this Government/Fidesz Party – over the past decade, that continues with this Government of fragmenting, dissecting, re-arranging and re-writing – Democracy – in accordance to the CORE – the “Creeds”- of there Political ideas & philosophy.
POWER – through Constitutional Change – that limits again, the freedom or voice of Citizens – to SPEAK.
This is another example, that illiminates removes from Citizens – there RIGHTFUL means, to express either in agreement or objection – under Democracy – changes to a Constitution – that should be Publicly Debated.
“Hungary will continue to making every effort to restore Peace as soon as possible but it’s influence is limited”.
Globally, the World still waits has not received a near responce of conviction, what side in this Russian War staged against the Ukraine, what side – Prime Minister – Victor Orban and his Government support.
Hungary – postion it has created for it-self – is that it is WEDGED – and can’t move from the closeness and the dependancy of the RELATIONSHIP – they have with Russia.
This – does NOT sit favourable, with the European Union, NATO, Great Britain and the United States of America – and the greater wider world.
Hungary – will not win this “sit on the fence” – postion it has adapted because factually it is known – the Russian relationships – are “driving” and behind – the decision making processes in Hungary – Political – and they will be deeper, in the effects – there impact on Hungarian civilian life.
Hungary – we have an Economy – under enormous Strain – dissect the componentry of the Economy – it is FACT – and a Government in POWER – who will need to raise taxes – for revenue “needs” – which will hurt – the citizens of Hungary, through Higher costs of living and “other” – across the broadsheet of life – living in Hungary.
Hungarian government’s only duty is to the Hungarian people. Hungary should just stay neutral and ignore the rest of the world.
Did some people say that Hungary was not an authoritarian state?
Haven’t we learned anything from the past? Don’t we know that is very dangerous to allow all that power into one person’s hands?
What is parliament for? …Ah, but some would argue that it takes too long for parliament to act. Gee, I thought that the majority (68 p.c. ie, 135/199) of the National Assembly was, either the Pm’s own FiDeSZ, or it’s sidekick.
Doesn’t the Pm have ENOUGH trust in his own party (and it’s KDNP ally) to make important decisions?
Power corrupts (not that it hasn’t already: https://www.transparency.org/en/cpi/2021 (…) “…Two-thirds of countries score below 50, indicating that they have serious corruption problems, while 27 countries are at their lowest score ever.”. Hungary scored 43. 🙁
