Bertalan Tóth, the co-leader of the Socialists, will not seek his post again at a party congress in the autumn, the opposition politician said on Facebook on Sunday.
Party leaders assessed the results of the April 3 general election at a meeting on Saturday, Tóth said.
Tóth said he would support the Socialists’ shared work “as a team member”, heading the party’s parliamentary group after the autumn congress.
The Socialists must elect their leaders every two years, according to party rules. Tóth was elected co-leader together with Ágnes Kunhalmi at a congress in the autumn of 2020. Since 2018, he had held the post alone.
Meanwhile, István Ujhelyi, the only MEP of the Socialists, said yesterday that the party had to be radically renewed. Therefore, he would even change its name. Based on szeretlekmagyarorszag.hu, he wrote on Facebook that the party’s brand became damaged in the last 33 years. Therefore, he would rename it ‘Chance’ (Esély).

Wish it was true. It would be the best thing to happen to Hungary.
