CoE has important role in fostering peace, says Fidesz politican in Strasbourg
The Council of Europe (CoE) has an important role in fostering peace between Russia and Ukraine, Zsolt Németh, the head the Hungarian parliament’s delegation in Strasbourg, said on Monday.
After the opening of the spring session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Németh praised the CoE for acting swiftly and decisively when the war broke out, while maintaining its unity and expressing solidarity with Ukraine.
“Putting solidarity into practice in the coming period will be sorely needed,” he said.
He called for Russia and Ukraine to return to the path of diplomacy and reach the soonest possible ceasefire agreement.
Németh said the CoE also had an important role in launching an international inquiry into war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity.
Meanwhile, commenting on the CoE’s election monitoring during the recent Hungarian general election, Németh thanked its observers and called their attitude “exemplary”, saying they had not interfered in the electoral process.
“It would be good if other international organisations took the same approach in the future.”
