Shockingly high fuel prices for foreigners from Wednesday in Hungary!
Foreigners will have to pay significantly more for one litre of fuel from Wednesday since the cost of the fuel keeps rising. That increase does not concern foreign citizens with Hungarian license plates. They will be able to fill the tank by paying the government’s capped price. However, those foreigners and Hungarians whose license plates are not Hungarian will have to pay more for fuel in Hungary than ever from Wednesday. Here are the details.
The Hungarian government decided to introduce a price cap on fuel last November. That was because of the inflation and price increase generated by the end of the coronavirus pandemic. Furthermore, it was the fundamental interest of the fourth Orbán-cabinet to
mitigate the social consequences of the worsening economic situation in the world.
Therefore, the government introduced several price caps concerning some basic food types, utilities and fuel. Among others, these measures resulted in a fourth consecutive supermajority. Everybody thought Orbán would abolish the price caps after his new government is formed.
However, that did not happen. The fifth Orbán cabinet decided to extend the deadlines of all the price caps. Later they realized that Slovakians, Romanians, Serbians, Slovenians, and Austrians living close to the border took advantage of the situation.
They regularly use the Hungarian filling stations to evade the high fuel prices of their countries.

As a result, the government modified the relevant regulations. They said that car owners with Hungarian license plates could continue to buy fuel for the lowered price. All other car owners, regardless of their nationality, can use the filling stations in Hungary but have to buy fuel for the market price.
The capped price is still at 1.2 EUR per litre, while the market price stands below 2 EUR/l.
According to Privátbankár, from Wednesday, the fuel price will grow again. Therefore, foreigners will have to pay almost 800 HUF (2 EUR) for one litre of fuel. Holtankoljak.hu said that in the case of gasoline, the price increase would be a gross 11 HUF, while in the case of the diesel 10 HUF.
The market price from Wednesday will be
- 95 gasoline: 798.9 HUF per litre (1.99 EUR)
- diesel: 810.9 HUF per liter (2.02 EUR)

@Mindboggling – What are you trying to say? Is English your third language, or did your learn from an 18th century school-master? Given you change your moniker constantly, you still write in a fashion that is nearly unintelligible. Full of unnecessary hyphens and other grammatical idiosyncrasies. Please, you seem to have something to say, maybe use an app to help express your thoughts.
