New details on the fuel limit introduced in Hungary!
MOL will compensate those who were not yet aware of the new rules on Friday or who accidentally went over the quantitative limit.
New quantitative limit
As we reported before, from Friday, you can only fill up to fifty litres of petrol at MOL petrol stations at the official price. If you fill up more than that, you will have to pay the market price for the whole fill-up. This means an extra cost of HUF 20,000 (EUR 50) even for a few litres.
According to rtl.hu, the pumps do not yet stop refuelling at fifty litres, so it is possible that someone could accidentally slip over the fifty litre limit.

Experiment
A video posted on a Hungarian driver’s YouTube channel (AutóSámán) showed that if someone filled up with 53.6 litres, for example, they had to pay the market price of HUF 45 143 (EUR 112.46) for the full amount. In other words, you lose about HUF 20 000 (EUR 50).
The video shows the cameraman testing at a MOL petrol station (already after the announcement of the restrictions) whether the clock on the well post stops, or gives any indication, when he fills up with more than 50 litres.
It did not give any signal or did it stop, so the driver who bought 53.6 litres had to pay the market price of HUF 45 143 for the total amount of fuel. In other words, the driver lost HUF 20,000 in the attempt.
The changeover is still in progress
In response to rtl.hu’s question, MOL said that the mechanical changeover of the petrol pumps is ongoing, but the company has more than 470 filling stations, so the complete changeover will take a few days. It will be completed in the first half of next week at the latest. The company has also indicated that it will compensate those who have failed to comply with the new rules.
Compensation
As we can read in the article of 24.hu, MOL said the following:
“If you have not read the notice today and have filled up with more than 50 litres, if you are entitled to the official price, we will of course apply an official price to your refuelling above 50 litres. If for some reason this is not the case, you should contact MOL’s customer service and you will be compensated immediately.”
