Germany supports Hungary losing its veto in the EU. The country’s veto on foreign policy and security issues would be taken away, as ministers discussed in Brussels on Tuesday.
Hungary should lose its veto in the EU
Germany supports Hungary losing its veto in the European Union, Germany’s European Affairs Minister Anna Lührmann told Euronews. European Union ministers debated in Brussels on Tuesday whether to abolish the veto power of certain countries in foreign policy and security matters. The Euronews article recalls that Hungary has blocked EU foreign policy decisions and statements on Russia, China and Turkey on several occasions in recent years.
The country has blocked decisions
Lührmann explained that Hungary has already blocked several important decisions in the European Council. “We must show Russia that we will not tolerate their actions in Ukraine, both in the rule of law and in the European Union. That we will not tolerate their actions against human rights and human dignity, and we will stand united,” said the politician.
“Hungary has already blocked Council decisions several times with its sole veto, so I think it is important to move away from the veto in the area of common foreign and security policy, so that we can act more effectively against the threat from Russia,” she added.
The conditionality mechanism
“I think it’s a good thing that the Commission has introduced this instrument to secure contracts and in particular EU funds through the conditionality mechanism. This mechanism was set up with the support of the German government. Yes, this is very important. The committee decided on Sunday. We are now examining the details of the documents,” said Anna Lührmann.
Germany also backs the European Commission’s proposal for sanctions against Hungary in the rule of law procedure, which Lührmann said could serve as a warning to other member states, szeretlekmagyarorszag.hu reported. “It was important to send a clear signal to Hungary and to other member states that there will be consequences for breaches of the rule of law in payments,” the minister said.
The Commission is proposing a EUR 7.5 billion fine for Hungary if it fails to do all it can to fight corruption in the next two months.

RIGHTFULLY – the position Germany have expressed.
Friends of Hungary – they are ;
(1) – Russia.
(2)- China.
THEY have MASSIVE challenges at present and going forward.
Hungary – the European Union – the on-going collapsing of Hungary’s position and support from within the European Union, devastating.
Hungary – underneath its “Veiling” of Factuality – what is occurring in-side Hungary – the economic & financial collapse of its economy – Inflation & Rising Interest Rates – is FACT, that as a Government, under the Dictatorial “style” of Prime Minister – Victor Orban, his commencement in recent days to Rule by Decree – his Government – the Hungarian Government of the Fidesz Party – are IMPLODING.
Hungary – it GROWS in broadcast to the GLOBAL World – no longer are a DEMOCRACY.
”In the name of democracy” EU shuts out countries that don’t abide by their totalitarian world view. Germany, the useful idiots, helps along..
Don’t we just “love” opinions like the second one. Hungary does NOT have to abide by the EU’s “totatalitarian world view”, just get out of the EU, end of story!
Having said that, in 2003 Victor Orban was PM when a referendum was held whether to join, or not to join the EU (the referendum did NOT have to held, Hungary could have declined – no gun was held at anyone’s head on joining). 83.8 per cent of the voters voted “yes”, and in joining the EU, all countries agree to abide by all EU rules and regulations – that INCLUDES Hungary! Why can’t SOME people understand that. If the majority of Hungarian voters don’t like being in the EU, talk to the parliamentarian you voted in to represent you, and express your dissatisfaction with being in the EU, tell your representative that you demand a referendum on getting out of the EU, end of story!
…Do the MAJORITY of Hungarians want to be a part of Europe, or would they prefer to return to 1945 -c.1989 when the “Ruszki”-s had the FINAL say in Hungary, or maybe even let China buy all of Hungary and be its puppet?
