Reformed church pastor reprehended for Horthy bust display
Budapest, March 7 (MTI) – Pastor of the Reformed Church Lorant Hegedus on Friday was handed a written reprehension in a church investigation in connection with the unveiling of a memorial to Hungary’s regent Miklos Horthy last November.
At the end of January, the legal counsel to the Reformed Church requested that Hegedus be defrocked for unveiling the memorial. The event last year was attended in Central Budapest by about 400 people, some of whom were wearing WWII military or gendarme uniforms or the uniform of the banned Hungarian Guard. Couter-protesters were also at the scene. Jewish leaders and the US ambassador to Hungary were among those condemning the commemoration of Horthy, Hungary’s regent who led the country from 1920 to 1944.
