Drastic measures: no hot water, many Hungarian university buildings to close

The reason behind the drastic measures is the high utility costs and soaring energy prices. Péter Pázmány Catholic University (PPKE) is not the only Budapest university that needs to introduce measures to save money and energy. Below you may read the strategy of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) and the University of Pécs.
University forced to act
The Péter Pázmány Catholic University introduces savings measures due to the energy crisis. There will be no hot water in the buildings, autumn and spring break, and they will close multiple buildings. That is because of a recently published rector’s order, index.hu wrote.
Based on the university’s statement, they would like to save money by reducing consumption. To ensure cost-effective operation, the following measures are to be introduced.
- Interior temperature provided by heating cannot exceed 20 °C. That will be only 18 °C in the corridors and toilets, while 22 °C in the surgeries,
- There will be no hot water in the buildings and the university will switch off all the hand dryers,
- The exam period will be between 12 December – 19 December and 9 January – 11 February,
- The university will close between 19 December and 9 January,
- They will close their building on Szentkirályi Street between 16 October and 15 April. Furthermore, the Sophianum and the Esztergom campus will close between 19 December and 1 March.
- The university postpones autumn and spring breaks.
