Hungarian theatre festival starts in Berlin
(MTI) – A Hungarian theatre festival will start in Berlin today with the participation of a number of independent companies.
The week-long fesival titled “Leaving is not an option? Current artistic positions from Hungary”, is supported by the German Federal Cultural Foundation. It is hosted by the Hebbel am Ufer (HAU) theatre.
Bela Pinter and Company, Kornel Mundruczo and the Proton Theatre, Peter Karpati and the Secret Company, Csaba Polgar and the HOPPart Company, and Adrienn Hod and Company are on the programme.
The festival wants to provide a “platform” for “critical voices”, according to curator Aenne Quinones.
“The Fidesz government has left no doubt that they are not pleased with having a bothersome art scene,” Quinones says, noting that many artists are asking whether they should stay or go.
But the festival does not aim to “point a finger to Hungary”. Rather it “will seek out the overlappings and common questions between Budapest and Berlin” such as ways of artistic expression in a neo-liberal world.
