New Hungarian commemorative coins worth EUR 7-75

The National Bank of Hungary (Magyar Nemzeti Bank) is planning to issue 24 commemorative coins on fourteen themes in 2023. The thematically and technically diverse commemorative coin programme will include the continuation of eight series launched earlier, the MNB informed MTI.

It is planned to produce an extraordinarily high-value gold coin, nine silver coins and five non-ferrous metal commemorative coins. The bank will issue non-ferrous versions of the precious metal commemorative coins.

The themes also include significant historical, scientific and artistic anniversaries. Such an anniversary is the bicentenary of the composition of the Hungarian national anthem. This year commemorates the 250th anniversary of the birth of one of Hungary’s greatest writers, Mihály Csokonai Vitéz. The bicentennial of the birth of Sándor Petőfi, one of the most famous poets of Hungary will also take place this year, as well as the 175th anniversary of the outbreak of the 1848-49 Revolution and War of Independence.

The coin of the Hungarian National Archives, celebrating its 300th anniversary, will also be released. The MNB will issue a commemorative coin in honour of the sacrificial work of the National Ambulance Service, which has been operating for 75 years.

The commemorative coins will take a variety of shapes, from the standard circular coins to square and rectangular coins and hexagonal coins. A special feature of the latter is that its pieces will be able to be assembled in a mosaic-like pattern.

Continuing the series of commemorative coins

Decades-old series will also continue, such as the medal series promoting national memorial sites, Hungarian shepherds and hunting dog breeds. One of the most recognisable coin series will be the one-themed Hungarian Folk Tales, more specifically, The Salt.

They launched a series themed ‘Wolf Prize-winning mathematicians of Hungarian origin’. The second and third coins will be issued in 2023, with Pál Erdős and Raoul Bott. The coins are worth HUF 3,000 or 7,000 (EUR 7.58 or 17.68). The price depends on whether they are made of precious metal or non-ferrous metal.

As the 6th element in the “National Parks” series, a rectangular commemorative coin will be issued on the 50th anniversary of the declaration of the Hortobágy National Park as a protected area.

The ‘Hungarian explorers and their inventions’ series will be added with the 13th element this year. The coin commemorates 120 years of János Neumann’s birth, who was the father of the computer, and one of the greatest figures in the history of universal and Hungarian science. The coin is available for purchase for HUF 3,000.

A new addition to the series of the Árpád Dynasty of the Country-Building Kings, including the most valuable gold commemorative coin of the year, will be issued in an exceptionally low edition of 500 pieces, according to 24.hu.
