Snowstorm: Lufthansa plane almost ran out of fuel over Hungary, passengers in shock

Snowstorms and windstorms ruled Hungary yesterday, causing problems for car drivers and plane pilots alike. Lufthansa’s Munich-Debrecen flight wanted to land at the Debrecen International Airport but was unable to. Later, they tried Budapest, but the situation was the same. Since they were running out of fuel, they returned to Munich but offered almost no help to the passengers, who would like to sue the German airline. Below, you may read the details.

György Weisz, a former journalist of Blikk, told what happened to the Hungarian tabloid shortly after the events. The plane took off precisely when it was due in Munich with 70 passengers on board. They should have landed at 4.20 PM in Debrecen, but the pilot could not touch the plane down. They were only 50 metres above the ground, but the pilot decided not to risk the life of the travellers. He tried the manoeuvre again, but the result was the same. They said that was because of the bad weather and the strong winds reaching 80 km/h.

They tried to land in Budapest, but the airport refused to receive the plane. Since they were running out of fuel, they returned to Munich and landed in the Bavarian capital at 6 PM.

In Debrecen, 70 people waited for the flight but got no information from the airline. Many were furious, Mr Weisz said. The same happened with the 70 passengers on board. They arrived in Munich, and Lufthansa offered a change to Budapest on a greater plane leaving at 8.30 PM. But they will not help the passengers to get to Debrecen. They gave them a EUR 15 voucher to eat. However, not all of them could board the 8.30 PM plane. Those remaining got no help from the German airline.

Therefore, people are outraged. One of them would have had a meeting at the BMW. Another one would have travelled to Temesvár, Romania. Thus, Mr Weisz said that people would sue the airline. Moreover, they do not even know where their luggage is.

Krisztina Nagy, a spokesperson for Debrecen Airport, said that they helped the passengers to book other flights to Munich.
