Hungary’s postal workers have had enough
Two postal unions representing employees from 19 counties have handed a petition over to the company’s chief executive urging “meaningful talks” on a wage hike.
Magyar Posta employs half of its employees on the minimum wage, including those with decades of experience, the Postal Trade Union said in a statement on Thursday. The lack of an agreement on wages up to this point is “unacceptable”, it added.
Only wage rises that at the very least preserve the real value of postal employees’ pay are acceptable, according to the petition organised by the Postal Trade Union and the Association for the Protection of Interests of Hungarian Postal Workers.
Zsuzsanna Tóth, Postal Trade Union’s head called for the talks to be speeded up, and suggested that employees should be paid the negotiated pay rise retroactively from Jan 1, 2023.
