A former Socialist leader said something destructing about the Socialists
Attila Mesterházy, a former Socialist leader who recently set up a new leftist party, has said in an interview that the Socialists Party had become politically “irrelevant”.
The MP who quit the Socialists to found a social democratic party called Socialists and Democrats told public television late on Thursday that any of today’s opposition party leaders would gladly sign up for even the worst poll results that the Socialists achieved under his leadership between 2010 and 2014. The Socialists, the successor of Hungary’s communist party, has consistently polled below the 5 percent threshold for seats in parliament in recent surveys.
Meanwhile, he said that it was unfair to accuse Péter Márki-Zay, the joint opposition’s prime ministerial candidate in the 2022 elections, for the left wing’s failure. He added that he had decided against joining the Democratic Coalition, and had set up a new party instead because he considered DK under the leadership of Ferenc Gyurcsány to be “too liberal”, MTI quoted the former Socialists chairman.
