Defence Minister: Hungary Airspace Control To Be Complete With Medina Radar
Budapest, March 18 (MTI) – Hungary’s airspace control will be complete with the NATO radar station to become active in Medina, the defence minister said at the inauguration of the radar tower at the site in southern Hungary today.
Csaba Hende called resolving the placement of the radar station one of the major successes of Hungarian defence in the past four years. He said the project has been of such importance that NATO has decided to cover 94 percent of its costs.
The tower structure is complete with 111 reinforced concrete columns, said Lajos Moro, the director of the defence construction company. The installation of a new 3D radar device is under way. The radar is expected to be up and running in the first quarter of 2015. It is to replace Soviet technology in operation since 1987.
Medina will be the third 3D radar facility controlling Hungary’s airspace after Bankut (N) and Bekescsaba (SE).
