Hungarian government committed to reducing air pollution

Anikó Raisz, state secretary at the energy ministry, voiced the Hungarian government’s commitment to improving the quality of the air in the country, speaking in the environment council of the Council of the European Union in Luxembourg on Wednesday.

The Hungarian government’s goal is “to preserve a clean country for future generations,” the ministry quoted Raisz as saying.

At the meeting, the state secretary noted the importance of the stability of energy supplies with regard to the war in Ukraine, and called for more feasible air quality directives for member states. She said the Hungarian government supported the target values defined until 2030, but “suggested more realistic values and deadlines for the period beyond”.

Participants in the meeting discussed a review of an EU decree of the carbon dioxide emissions of heavy vehicles. Hungary continues in its commitment to achieving its climate neutrality goals and supports keeping the bloc’s reduction targets unchanged until 2029, but suggests that the emissions of heavy vehicles should be reduced by 35 percent between 2030-2034, and by 55 percent between 2035-2039, the statement said.

The state secretary has also suggested that the revised decree should support the use of bio- and CO2-neutral fuels, the ministry added.
