An aircraft with twenty container homes has departed from Hungary for the fire-ravaged Hawaiian Islands, defence ministry state secretary Tamás Vargha said on Saturday.
Vargha expressed his sadness over the fire on Maui island that killed many people and many more are still missing. As the blaze almost completely destroyed a city, the people living there were left without shelter, he added. Hungary is helping the victims of the disaster; the twenty collapsible containers now carried by a C17 aircraft to Maui were made by Continest Technologies in Székesfehérvár, Vargha said. He said these containers, fitted with a bathroom and kitchen, will serve as temporary homes for the evacuees.

The state secretary said the Székesfehérvár company received orders for 250 containers, of which the first twenty are now being shipped to Hawaii. On Maui, part of the Hawaiian Islands, the flames started last Tuesday, reaching the inhabited area extremely quickly in the dry, windy weather. The historic city of Lahaina, the former capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii, was almost completely destroyed. More than a hundred people died in the fire.
