International fast-fashion store announces Budapest outlet opening date

Primark, the popular fast-fashion retailer, will be opening its first store in Hungary early next year. The company has issued a statement to clarify that the opening date previously reported in the Hungarian press was inaccurate.

According to Index, Primark issued a press release on Friday about when they will open their first store in the country. In the statement, it was first stated that “inaccurate dates have recently appeared in the press regarding the opening of the Primark store in Budapest”.

The possible opening could be in early next year

A few months ago, it was revealed that the popular international chain (a big favourite for Hungarian shoppers, especially their store in Vienna) was coming to Hungary. As we also wrote in August, the first domestic outlet of the Irish fast-fashion chain is expected to open in mid-September this year. It was suggested by the fact that the company has published a teaser video where prospective employees are enticed to apply. Now, it seems that the great opening has been postponed.

Primark’s first store in Hungary will be located in one of the city’s largest shopping malls, Aréna Mall. The shop is expected to open in 2024, with an official date which will be announced by the company later. Primark welcomes the public’s interest in the upcoming launch in Hungary – they wrote.

What you should know before you buy anything at Primark

Primark stands out for having fashionable clothes for almost pennies. Cheapness is both a pro and a con, and they respond to criticism with efforts to be sustainable. Here are the 5+1 most important things that you should know about the retail chain:

1. The first Primark store opened in Dublin in 1969.
2. Initially, the store was called Penney’s, but after they began expanding outside Ireland, they had to find a new name as JC Penney from the USA had already registered the Penney’s name in the UK.
3. The founder and chairman of Primark was Arthur Ryan, who was hired to run the Dublin store in 1969. Ryan died in 2019, at the age of 83. Among other things, he was famous for regularly visiting shops. In the event that he saw something was out of date, he would order it to be quickly marked down, sometimes to as little as £1.
4. The retail chain is currently owned by Associated British Foods (ABF), a diversified global food, ingredients and retail group with annual revenues above £15 billion. ABF owns brands such as Twinings and Ovaltine.
5. Primark currently has 416 shops in 15 European and American countries.
   Hungary will become the 6th country in the CEU region and the 17th worldwide to have a Primark store.
6. The largest Primark store is located in Birmingham, England. It has five floors and 161,000 square metres of space.

There is always something new at Primark. It’s also cheap, it’s a typical teen range, it keeps your attention, it’s exciting at first. Hungarians aren’t used to seeing a huge selection in a huge warehouse, because we don’t have department stores of that size, so Primark makes you feel good at first,

The expert says that after the novelty wears off, only time will tell whether Primark will be next to the cheap, fast-fashion stores that offer nothing of quality in the minds of shoppers, or whether it will be in a higher quality category.
