Speaker: Hungary should not vote for Sweden’s NATO accession
Sweden is at the gates of the NATO accession but still waiting for the approval of the Hungarian and Turkish parliaments.
Experts say Orbán’s Hungary did not give the green light for Sweden to support his friend, Erdogan, Türkiye’s newly elected president. Now László Kövér, the Speaker of the Hungarian Parliament, said the Fidesz-KDNP majority should not vote for Sweden’s NATO accession. That is because an anti-Orbán government video about democracy concerns in Hungary is part of Swedish education (watch it HERE).
Furthermore, Kövér believes that the Swedish do not like their country: they hate it. Therefore, Hungary should not stay in one military alliance with them. In contrast, Kövér cleared that the backbone of the Hungarian Air Force is Swedish fighters, and the Swedish military helps maintain those aircraft, 444.hu wrote. Therefore, Sweden’s NATO membership would be advantageous for Hungary.

Petty arguments … Assuming that our Politicians are holding out for some concession they can hold out as a victory for their base, for a change. As they usually do when there is a veto card they are playing. However, it does antagonize the Members of any club, at some point. Especially if it is the same, sole Member wielding their veto, time and again. Imagine if this happens at your local tennants organization or sports club?
Note to anyone – do not give our Politicians a veto, you will be played. In the national interest, of course! However, they are happy to institute and perpetuate rule by decree to “streamline decision making”, which could be interpreted as hypocrisy?
Sweden is a mecca of woke liberalism. They oppose Hungary politically and deserve to remain neutral.
Let’s not forget they also supplied Hungary with Bofors anti-aircraft weapons in WWII.
@freedomofspeech – let us not drag WW2 into this discussion, because as far as mainstream Europe is concerned, we were Nazis and collaborators, notwithstanding the attempts at revisionism in Szabadság Tér.
After the end of the Cold War, quote: “The new democracies of Central and Eastern Europe were eager to guarantee their freedom by becoming integrated into Euro-Atlantic institutions. NATO enlargement was the subject of lively debate in the early 1990s. Many political analysts were unsure of the benefits that enlargement would bring. Some were concerned about the possible impact on Alliance cohesion and solidarity, as well as on relations with other states, notably Russia. ”

So. The original Members, after “lively debate”, decided they would let us join, nonetheless. And now, we unilaterally decide (VETO – it WILL eventually be just Hungary – Mr. Erdogan WILL sign off) that Sweden should be left out, not under the NATO umbrella?
Shame on us!
Sweden is a ruined country with no go zones and high crime due to influx of migrants. So let us not glorify Sweden as the ideal country.
Since most commentators do not have the same information that the government has, there must be a good reason why Hungary is opposed to Sweden’s entry. Let us wait to have all information before having a fit and making naive statements.
@mariavontheresa – I am generally not bowled over by our Politicians reasoning regarding any decision. Or the sense that hard facts and data are indeed used in the decision-making process. The lack of parliamentary debate (State of Emergency / Alarm / Rule by Decree) is obviously also not helping.
Of 31 NATO Members, 29 have ratified Sweden’s proposed accession. The Turkish position (and Mr. Erdogan´s approach) I can understand. However, if our Politician’s position is so robust, then perhaps they should have been able to convince our fellow Members of their error with this pivotal “information”. Or is that … Naive?
It would be easier to live with the EU if Hungary would just say yes and amen to everything that comes out of NATO and EU. However, there is a difference between Conservatism and Socialism. Communism and the following socialism totally ruined the country. Communist leaders, who later became socialist leaders like Christmas, cleaned up while the population struggled. That should never happen again. Socialism is probably more destructive than communism. Hungary, with a Christian Conservative government, is finally turning the corner. Its Hungary first policy affects all its decisions.
