Hungarian government: Animal protection a common cause
The government takes animal welfare and animal protection highly seriously, the government spokesperson said on Wednesday, World Animal Day.
Alexandra Szentkiralyi said in a video on Facebook that 250,000 people had responded to the government’s online animal protection survey launched in February 2021, and the cabinet had since channeled HUF 500 million (EUR 1.3 million) into sterilisation programmes and HUF 100 million (EUR 258,337) into animal protection NGOs.
She noted the establishment of the National Animal Protection Council, and also that representatives of state scientific and NGOs have signed an animal protection code, a first in the history of domestic animal protection.
In addition, regulations on stray animals have been promulgated and individual criminal laws have been amended to tighten penalties for animal cruelty.
