Video footage of a teenager being hit by a car at a zebra crossing in Hungary

The driver did not slow down when nearing the zebra crossing, consequently failing to spot the pedestrian in time. The teenage victim had the right of way but unexpectedly stepped onto the road, pushing his bicycle alongside.

Several cars had passed without giving the pedestrian the opportunity to cross before the accident occured. The female driver, as she approached, noticed the victim while he was attempting to cross the road and promptly pushed the brakes. Nonetheless, she was not fast enough and ended up hitting the teenager. As a consequence of the collision, the victim sustained serious injuries that required over eight days to heal. The actual recovery period extended to three months.

In the legal indictment, the prosecution recommended that the court impose a fine on the offender and prohibit her from driving.

Not a single car slowed down to allow him to cross and finally when he tried to he was hit. Visibility is terrible in rain with low light. I wonder how well the drivers could see the white lines of the zebra crossing. Water on the road can make white lines difficult to see. Was the windshield of the woman’s car fogged up? She barely slowed down and he was well into the middle of the crossing. There needs to be a flashing signal lamp for these crossings. I think also drivers in Hungary are not careful enough when it comes to pedestrians.

In Hungary, nobody stops for pedestrian crossings. In my district (IX), all the locals know where they are – and there are many. Nobody slows down. Cars don’t stop for bicycles, either, when the bicycle has right of way (likely to get shouted at, in addition).

For all the coaching during drivers education, it does not translate to the road. Perhaps, as with speeding, actually start giving out fines and penalties? Our Politicians should love it – Law and Order!
