THE Ranking: Four Hungarian universities performed really well again
The 2023 ranking for the best universities for studying a certain subject was just released. Times Higher Education (THE) featured many Hungarian universities, such as ELTE, BME, Óbuda University, and the University of Debrecen. Thus, it is no wonder why Hungary is such a desired destination for foreign students.
THE Ranking
As we have reported HERE, Hungarian universities were among the best according to THE’s higher education ranking. The three key factors in that ranking were education, research and business activity. Now, as Economx wrote, the Academic Rankings of World Universities (ARWU) list was published on the 27th of October. The authors of the rankings use a similar methodology to the one used for THE’s higher education ranking, which was mentioned above.
There are 16 criteria points for making the list. These include the ratio of faculty to students and the research environment and quality. The list has been compiled by an organisation called ShanghaiRanking Consultancy since 2009. The ranking showcases the best universities in five broader disciplines and 55 narrow fields. 5,000 universities all over the world were compared for the study.
The best of the best
Out of the 55 narrower fields, there are 8 that feature ELTE. The best place for doing a programme in Physics, Biology, Psychology, Education Science, Political Science, or Communication is ELTE. We also wrote recently that ELTE is the best Hungarian university according to a new study. When it comes to Mathematics, it shares the first place with BME. Speaking of BME, in the list of the top 1900 universities in the world, it was ranked 301–400 position for mechanical engineering, 401–500 position for electrical engineering, and 201–300 in Mathematics. The GRAS list has been published every year since 2017. Thus, we can say that BME has been on that list from the very start. Only 5,000 universities were analysed for the list, although there are around 25,000 universities in the world. Moreover, only 1,900 higher education providers got on the ranking.
IT and technology programmes
- Óbuda University was ranked in the 601–800 zone for both its IT and technology programmes.
- In the field of Physical Sciences, it was listed in the 801–1000 range. BME was also put in the 601–800 position for its technology programmes.
- BME and the University of Debrecen were ranked 601–800 for their IT programmes.
