Frosty winter is here, Budapest has already seen snowfall – PHOTOS

It’s official now: winter has arrived. The temperature dropped below zero in many parts of Hungary, and in some locations, including Budapest, there was even snow. The temperature could dip below -10 degrees Celsius this week! Here is what to expect.

Winter is coming to Hungary

Portfolio writes that this week will start mildly, with only lighter airwaves arriving in the country. The weather will be warmer than in previous years, but it will be spoiled by rain. On Wednesday, the weather takes a big turn as dry air will arrive from the north. Luckily, the strong, sometimes gusty northerly wind will ease by Thursday. However, frosts are expected, and temperatures in the frosty areas will plummet as low as -10 degrees Celsius. From Friday, temperatures will moderately rise, but we can expect mostly cloudy and gloomy days in Hungary.

White Christmas

According to Hungarian traditional beliefs, if it snows on Elisabeth’s Day, the 19th of November, it will also snow on Christmas day. You can read about other peculiar Hungarian superstitions HERE. In the past, this day also marked the deadline for completing all agricultural work, such as sowing winter wheat and moving animals into the barn. Since it snowed on Elisabeth’s Day, now there’s hope for a white Christmas.

Snow in Budapest

While snow in Hungary is expected with the onset of winter, Budapest enjoyed an unusually long Indian summer this autumn. Even two weeks ago, we had plenty of sunshine, and thoughts of winter coats remained tucked away. However, 24.hu has reported that it was snowing in Normafa, Budapest last Sunday. It was a light snowfall, but harsher weather was on its way. Expect frost and snow in the country, especially in the northern counties. Snowy mountains

Index writes that the lowest temperature last Sunday was recorded in Zabar, where it reached -5.3 degrees Celsius in the morning. Heavier snowfall occurred in the Bakony region compared to Budapest due to the arrival of a lighter air mass. The Nagy-hideg Mountain provided the most spectacular view, with snow falling in large flakes.
