BREAKING: Another retail chain in Hungary remains closed on 24 December!
After Lidl and Rossmann, Penny Hungary has also confirmed to a Hungarian media outlet that they will not be open on 24 December.
According to 444.hu, all 230 Penny stores in Hungary will be closed on 24 December this year. This allows their employees to spend three consecutive days with their loved ones from 24 to 26 December. However, in the days leading up to 24 December, employees will face increased workload as the stores will remain open for extended hours to cater to customers’ needs adequately.
This isn’t the first instance of Penny shops closing on 24 December. In 2016, they made a similar decision not to open on Christmas Eve, which also fell on a Sunday that year.
Penny emphasised that they carefully considered the interests of both employees and customers in making this decision, aligning with the guidance of the Union of Trade Employees (KASZ).
“According to Hungarian traditions, families gather on 24 December, Christmas Eve. Thanks to Penny’s decision, our employees once again have the opportunity to spend the preparation period with their loved ones. Naturally, we also took our customers’ interests into account when making this decision, offering them extended opening hours in the days leading up to Christmas,” stated Eszter Kazatsay, Head of Communications at Penny Hungary.
Penny encourages its customers to plan ahead, suggesting the purchase of durable food weeks before the holiday. On 22 and 23 December, all stores will be open until 10 p.m., and from 27 December onwards, they will return to normal business hours.
