Here is how and when you can travel on one of Hungary’s oldest buses, the ‘Nejlon Piroska’
Nejlon Piroska is one of Hungary’s oldest but functioning buses, and you can be on board this December.
According to Helló Magyar, the old Ikarus 30-type bus is 70 years old, but retro lovers can try it this December to prepare for the holidays as if they lived in the 1950s in Hungary. The vehicle will shine in holiday decoration, and you can go on a sightseeing tour between 2 and 23 December from station 1 at the Népliget International Bus Station in Budapest. Furthermore, you can also visit the capital’s popular Aeropark.
The old bus was completely renewed thanks to a Hungarian program. Volánbusz presented it on the Retro Day in April 2023 in Hatvan. The iconic vehicle has taken part in countless events ever since, providing nostalgic travels for the partakers.
Meet the Nejlon Piroska at Népliget
In December, you may check it out at station 1 in Budapest’s Népliget bus station. Furthermore, you may travel on 2, 9, 16 and 23 December from 2 PM with it to Budapest Aeropark, the aviation museum of the Ferenc Liszt International Airport. There you can enjoy a tour while drinking hot chocolate.
The bus will arrive back to Budapest by 5 PM. Afterwards, a one-hour-long sightseeing tour starts at 6 PM. The route will be the following: Népliget–ÜllÅ‘i Road–Nagykörút–Andrássy Avenua–Heroes’ Square–Dózsa György Road–Ajtósi Dürer sor–Stefánia Road–Stadion–Népliget. On 6 December, the arrival day of Santa Claus in Hungary (we wrote about that HERE), there will also be a sightseeing tour from 6 PM.
The Aeropark tour with the sightseeing costs HUF 6,000 (EUR 15.8), while the ticket for the city sightseeing will be HUF 2,500 (EUR 6.5). Moreover, kids will receive Santa presents each day.
However, there is no heating on the nostalgia bus, so you should keep your warm clothes close.
