Hungarian one-day motorway ticket will be very expensive
The one-day motorway ticket in Hungary is set to be even pricier than its Austrian counterpart.
As reported by 444.hu, János Lázár, Hungary’s Minister of Transport and Construction, disclosed the cost of the one-day motorway ticket, available from next March. The fee will be HUF 5,150 (EUR 13.5), a point he underscored during his Monday hearing in a parliamentary committee.
Interestingly, Austria plans to roll out its one-day motorway ticket in March as well, but it comes at a lower price of EUR 8.6, which is less than HUF 3,500. This revelation has left drivers’ associations in Hungary somewhat taken aback by the stark cost difference.
Despite reservations from the government about the concept of one-day tickets, their introduction is deemed necessary due to an EU regulation. Gergely Gulyás, the Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff, expressed on government information channels that the one-day motorway ticket is primarily advantageous for foreign tourists, as “Hungarians do not buy such things.” Hence, the government is introducing a pricing structure almost equivalent to a ten-day motorway ticket, priced at HUF 5,500 (EUR 14.5), while an annual motorway ticket for a county stands at HUF 5,750 (EUR 15).
