Here is a beautiful and cost-effective Christmas fair in Hungary

Even though it is not in Budapest, it is easy to travel there by car or train and the travel time is not even 3 hours. Furthermore, Szeged is Hungary’s sunshine capital, where even yesterday, temperature records were broken. Meanwhile, the weather was cold, foggy and rainy (snowy) in all other parts of the country.

According to telex.hu, the Christmas fair’s traditional place in Szeged is the Dóm Square. There is an Advent wreath with four candles and even a selfie spot. The Christmas fair of the Southern Hungarian city opened the day before yesterday.

There is a 50m high Ferris wheel (the ‘Szeged Eye’). The adult ticket costs HUF 2,500 (EUR 6.58), while children have to pay HUF 2,000 (EUR 5.26). A pony ride costs only HUF 1,500 (EUR 4), while the carousel is HUF 1,000 (EUR 2.63) for two minutes.

Last year, there was an energy crisis, while this year was the time of a record-high Hungarian inflation in Europe. However, neither factor affected the Szeged Christmas fair. Prices did not grow significantly compared to 2022. Foods are much cheaper than in Budapest, though it is better to buy hot wine in the capital. Odd-one-out: Hot wine is cheaper in Budapest Christmas fairs

Hot chocolate costs HUF 430 (EUR 1.13), hot cheery and chocolate-flavoured beer is HUF 300 (EUR 0.8), while lemon tea is HUF 170 (EUR 0.45) per dl. Christmas punch costs HUF 300, just like the spicy apple juice. Hot wine is HUF 5-600/dl (EUR 1.32-1.58), roasted chestnuts are HUF 1,390 (EUR 3.66) and delicious, while a chimney cake is HUF 1,500 (EUR 4).

Pies cost HUF 2,000 (EUR 5.26), but they are very delicious, hot and filling, according to the journalists of the telex.hu. Those choosing to eat meat can buy a small portion of roasted beef for that sum or a large one for double.

At the fair, you can buy exotic products like truffles, handmade jewellery or even cheap books. Compared to Budapest’s Vörösmarty Square Christmas fair, Szeged costs half the money. For example, chimney cake is around HUF 3,200 in Budapest, while only HUF 1,500 in Szeged. Interestingly, hot wine is cheaper in Budapest than in Szeged.
