Orbán: ‘There is no war in Ukraine’ as no declaration of war from Russia
There is no war in Ukraine, Viktor Orbán said at a government briefing on Thursday. Asked why, during his visit to Beijing, in the company of Vladimir Putin, he called the war in Ukraine a military operation according to the Russian narrative, he said “because it is a military operation, as long as there is no declaration of war between the two countries”.
You read that right: Viktor Orbán, Prime Minister of Hungary, neighbour country of Ukraine, just said that there is no war in Ukraine. He called it a “military operation” (which is in line with the Russian narrative), and he said the reason was that there has not been an official proclamation of war.
“Let us rejoice as long as there is no war. Because if there is a war, there is a general mobilisation, and I don’t wish that on anyone,” the prime minister said. Orbán not only took the already pushed Russian narrative of war in the pro-government press to a new level, but also contradicted all his own previous statements, Telex writes.
So far, the narrative has been clear: there is a serious war going on in Ukraine that Hungary needs to stay out of. Orbán said there was a war in the neighbouring country even a day ago. Yesterday, it was an important point to make, as he had to argue against Ukraine’s opening of EU accession negotiations.
“It seems to me that we have three problems at once, and the world and our lives are more dangerous than they were a year ago. We are plagued by the war between Russia and Ukraine,”
Orbán said.
“But we’ve never done it before where we have a country that is at war and we start negotiations with a country that is at war,”
he added.
Most recently, his foreign minister, Péter Szijjártó, has said that this staying out of the war is the greatest success of Hungarian foreign policy. Russian propaganda was still prevalent though: he suggested that what is happening is the responsibility of the West, or perhaps of the actor Zelenskyy, who is at war instead of negotiating.
“To call what Russia is doing in Ukraine a war is not a legal question, but a universal moral question,” Telex concludes. How PM Orbán can soundly sleep at night or look into the mirror still, is a question for another day.

And this is the man Hungarians vote for. Complete puppet of Putin and selling the Hungarian and Ukrainian to the Russians. Judas.
Orwellian Newspeak and Doublethink: https://www.thoughtco.com/doublespeak-language-term-1690475
Or was it just to please Mr. Putin. Words as well as acts. Not very veiled, at this point.
At least they have figured out that abstaining is a better strategy than trying to stop 26 other EU Members from dealing with an obvious threat in our neighboring country #hope
Orban is a total embarrassment for Hungary. He just gets worse every day. What is wrong with Hungarians that they continue to elect this back stabbing hooligan who has no scruples. Hungary has lost any good will it might have had in Europe.
Orban’s foreign policy is possibly the best on the planet. It is certainly the best in the EU! Choosing for Hungary to stay neutral in the Ukraine-Russian conflict serves to reinforce that! Well done, Mr Orban.
Ha! Ha! Ha! – Orban is so far up Putin’s jaksi, that he’s a laughing stock for the whole globe.
Hetzmann Mercédesz’s brilliant article – as author – would be assassinated in Russia if she had written a parallel article there. As it is Orban controls ‘his’ media, mainly through MTI – and wishes he could control his population like Putin. (So watch your back Mercédesz.) He’s nearly there, but to go the whole hog, he needs to leave the EU. Which could be imminent, as he’s not happy about the funds the EU are withholding due to Hungary’s interpretation of what ‘democracy’ is.
Orban’s command of English is really quite limited – he only has a footballer’s IQ to try and understand the difference between a ‘war’ and a military operation.
Very similar to admitting his administration is an ‘illiberal’ autocracy. I’m sure he didn’t fully understand the negative connotations using ‘illiberal’ but he’s not got the humility to admit it.
So don’t be surprised for more nonsense from Orban’s ‘love-in’ with Putin. Can you hear me Ross?
Even as the EU has hinted that it may divvy up a €10 billion fund-release – it’s about time that we had a few more football stadiums, don’t you think? It’s one of Orban’s personal fund raising activities – as his mate Lőrinc Mészáros trousers 10% as Orban’s Crony-Oligarch-Strohmann.
Ah yes! Ross. Putting his country first! – Isn’t it time to feed some of those shape-shifting lizards?
If there is no war then there’s no need to govern by dictact. And as RU intervention in UA is due to other reasons, then we should be working with the rest of the EU community to also send aid for whatever it was that had caused all of the hardships that are occurring in that neighbouring country.
Orban Viktor is the greatest leader in the history of Hungary. All loyal Hungarians must give their support to him and him alone.
No criticism should go unpublished.
If our great leader says there is no war, there is no war.
We love you Viktor.
What a pathetic tiny little puppet ( in spite of his ridiculous 5XL size ) touring the world to spread the word of his powerful master. He is a Satrap in his feud, but remains a servile dwarf in the world scenario.
One wonders how the PM would respond if genuinely challenged by the media?
For example, the non war in Ukraine is not Hungary’s war…. but if Russia prevailed and was next to Hungary’s border, then what?
Screaming for NATO’s article 5 and telling Russians to go home, or just rollover….?
Narratives for older voters are becoming very confusing and contradictory….
What planet is this individual – Victor Orban on ?
On-going disgrace, the image he builds, the GLOBAL, especially those Governed under DEMOCRACY, that is being witnessed of his DESTRUCTION of Hungary – APPALLING.
Ceilings continue to collapse on top of Hungary, and walls CRUMBLE all around us, as a country, through the CREATION of Victor Orban, the decimation of friendships SMASHED – through the idiotic political ideas and philosophy, his “Warped” ideology, all of which have culminated, resulting in cataclysmic FAILUES, that have placed us Hungary, in the UGLY place we are to-day, a country in a position of GRAVE un-certainty.
History we KNOW never Lies, and what Hungarians in there MILLIONS are allowing Victor Orban to inflict upon them – Detestable.
Albert Einstein quote(s) muchly “Marry” into what Victor Orban continues to inflict upon Hungary.
These quotes of Einstein’s are:
(1) – “We can’t solve to-days problems with the MENTALITY that created them.”
and secondly;
(2) – “The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them and do NOTHING.”
The longer he holds the office as Foreign Minister in the Orban Government, being the “Lackey” for Victor Orban, as he is, that in all the right Political places, the European Union, and country’s Governed under Democracy, in fact, his image reputation grows, adding to his growing CV, the disrespect he is held, and that Peter Szijjarto, is a LOOSE Canon.
“A declaration of war is a formal announcement by a sovereign or state of the beginning of hostilities against another1. It is a formal act by which one state goes to war against another2. The declaration is a performative speech act or the signing of a document by an authorized party of a national government2. It creates a state of war between two or more states2”. This is the accepted definition of war according to Microsoft Edge (search engine).
Did any of you naysayers read the article or check the definition of the word war, no I did not think so. As far as definitions go, Ukraine/Russia melee could be called a military action or a “police action (often used to refer to the Korean conflict).
So, instead of raising you blood pressure, have a margarita, relax and smile. Prime Minister Orban, as usual was right.
Death and destruction are the result of all military conflicts. Bad foreign policies usually cause conflicts. This time Ukraine is fighting a proxy war on behalf of President Biden. President Zelensky’s and President Putin’s actions were ill advised. Countries should not respond to foreign manipulations.
