The biggest flood of the last 10 years to arrive to Budapest
Thanks to Saturday’s heavy snowfall nationwide, it looks like we’ll be having a white Christmas this year. What else will we get under the Christmas tree? Hopefully not the Danube.
According to forecasts, the Danube’s water level may reach the lower embankment for the first time since 2013. Thankfully, flood defences are underway in the capital. Canal locks and lower-level surface crossings are being closed in preparation.
Forecast warning
In the recent period, precipitation ranging from 10 to 30 millimetres in the Carpathian Basin, and much more in the Alps has occurred, writes szeretlekmagyarorszag.hu. Adding that occasionally it can reach up to 30-70 millimetres of mixed precipitation. The variable, often rainy and windy weather will persist over the weekend, with further expected precipitation of 10-20 millimetres. Austrian catchment areas are expected to receive twice that amount in several waves.
Adding to the concern, from Sunday onwards, warming is anticipated in most of the Carpathian Basin, triggering snowmelt even at altitudes of 3000 meters. Consequently, flood waves are expected on the Danube.
Emergency action
According to the statement made by the Budapest Sewage Works on Saturday to MTI, preparations are already in motion. Budapest is getting ready for the Christmas spirit as well as the possible flood. Employees of the Budapest Sewage Works have inspected main collectors and ensured the lockability of canals. Anticipating a rise in the Danube water level, protective measures have been implemented at locations like the underpass of Kastélypark Street in the 22nd district and the holiday shore of Kossuth in the 3rd district.
So far, nine locations have been closed in response to rising water levels to safeguard the city from flooding during the Christmas holidays. Here’s to hoping Hungary experiences a white and dry Christmas this year!
