Public transport considerably changes in Hungary today
Public transport changes significantly today in Hungary. Trains, buses, HÉV trains and vehicles of the Budapest Transport Company will operate differently during the festivities.
According to origo.hu, Hungary’s state railway company, MÁV, will attach more carriages to their most popular InterCity trains. That is because traffic is heavier during the holiday, and many people would like to visit their relatives, so the company tries to satisfy the increased needs.
MÁV promised to operate additional carriages if passengers’ needs require that. Nevertheless, they recommend all passengers buy their tickets in advance, use the vending machines or acquire their tickets online with the help of the Elvira or the MÁV app.
On 24 and 25 December, trains will operate following their holiday schedule. On 26 December, they will serve passengers according to their Sunday timetable.
Volánbusz will also operate differently during the holiday period. On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, buses will commute following their public holiday schedule. On Boxing Day, buses will follow their school holiday schedule. Between 27 and 29 December, Volánbusz will operate according to their school holiday timetable.
HÉV is one of the most important means of public transport in Budapest. On 24 December, trains will follow the holiday schedule. On H5, H6, H8, and H9 lines, HÉV trains will commute even after 4 PM on Christmas Eve, but less frequently. On 25 and 26 December, they will follow their public holiday schedule, while between 27 and 29 December, they will commute according to their timetable valid on the last days of the year.
Budapest’s public transport company, BKK, will also have a modified timetable during the festivities. Today, they will carry passengers according to their weekend timetable. On 24 December, the last daytime buses, trolley buses and trams will start between 3 and 4 PM. Afterwards, only night routes will operate.
This year, more night buses will operate until 6 PM because experience shows that many people would like to check out the city’s lighting.
On 25 and 26 December, BKK will follow their holiday timetable. Between Wednesday and Friday, the school holiday schedule will be in effect.
