Hungarian government says EU politicians want to take young people to the Ukrainian front

“Crazy proposals” to introduce the draft in Europe “are unacceptable”, the foreign minister said on Monday, adding that “the Hungarian government will in no way allow central European youths, including Hungarians, to be sent to the war in Ukraine.”

At a press conference after a meeting of his European Union counterparts, Péter Szijjártó said “the countdown” to the European parliamentary elections “is unfortunately bringing about an increase in war sentiment”, with many proposing more money and arms for Ukraine, “which can only result in further destruction and more deaths”.

He referred to proposals aimed at allowing Ukraine to use Western arms against targets in Russia. “They talk positively about an initiative for NATO countries to shoot down Russian missiles above Ukraine and, unfortunately, my fellow foreign ministers have not distanced themselves from threats of nuclear war,” he said, adding that such remarks and “crazy proposals” could have “dangerous and tragic consequences”.

“We don’t want to see Hungarians at the frontline of the Ukraine-Russia war, and we do not want young Hungarians to be taken to Ukraine. This isn’t our war and we have nothing to do with it,” Szijjártó said.

“We firmly call on all European politicians mulling mandatory conscription to drop such ideas immediately… Hands off our central European and Hungarians young people,” Szijjártó said.

Regarding the draft of the 14th sanctions package against Russia, Szijjártó said that it was against Hungary’s economic interests in its current form and would also endanger the security of Hungary’s energy supply. The government was unwilling to vote for it, he added.

He said the measures would swipe a serious blow to Hungary’s agriculture and food industry, and could compromise “the way Hungary pays for” its electricity, slow down the Paks upgrade project and violate Hungary’ sovereignty concerning the issuance of certain export permits.

He insisted that the previous 13 sanctions packages had done “a lot more harm to Europe than to Russia”.

On another subject, Szijjártó said Hungary was sticking to its earlier position and would not agree to freeing up a further 6.5 billion euros from the European Peace Facility for arms deliveries to Ukraine.

He said the foreign ministers of Germany, Lithuania, Ireland, Poland and other countries had “ganged up on him” at the meeting but “this hasn’t shaken our position”. “No matter how loud Europe’s pro-war politicians shout … we won’t give in to pro-war pressure,” he said.

“We insist that peace must be achieved and the senseless killing of people stopped; any escalation of the war must be prevented,” he said.

  1. EU socialists have lost their mind. They are talking about EU draft and sending young Europeans to Ukraine. As President Biden would say “don’t”. The EU politicians are adamant about extending the war. If Ukraine is so short of soldiers that it needs boots from other countries, it is time for them to sue for peace.

  2. Many countries have conscription. If the standing army does not have enough troops to deter threats conscription is a necessity. Russia currently is an existential threat to Europe. The idea of conscription is unrelated to any proposal to send troops to Ukraine. Szijjarto and Orban’s hysteria is Russian propaganda. No one can force Hungarians to fight in Ukraine. Fidesz lies constantly. If an individual NATO country wants to send troops to Ukraine that is their decision. The greatest threat to everyone is to cower in weakness which Russia will take advantage of. It is basic psychology and Szijjarto and Orban are working relentlessly to make Europe weak to enable Russian success to take over Ukraine. Russian success will encourage further Russian aggression.

  3. Have young native Europeans die for Ukraine? Go climb a tree. Send, instead, the millions of fighting-age men who came to Europe illegally and are living in the E.U. at taxpayers’ expense, contributing nothing except hatred for their hosts and crime against them.

  4. FAZIT – conscription will never ever be imposed by either NATO or the EU. Politician FEARMONGERING. Their favorite game:

Fact: Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Switzerland and Greece all currently have some form of compulsory military service – with high (70 percent plus) favorability ratings. Then there is Ukraine and Russia (the latter´s “disposable infantry” doctrine, not shared by NATO, is the leading cause of death). The Germans are “thinking about it”, and there, it is actually (unsurprisingly) opposed by the Left.

Personal: serving is arguably patriotic – I have Danes and Swiss working for me – they are proud to still be active reserve (I need to authorize time off for them to train – no issue!). I am also proud to have served. And, again (@michaelsteiner …), I would re-enlist if and when duty calls (as opposed to President Bonespur & co).

  5. Reality check: The EU has no army and is not sending any professional soldiers into the war, let alone conscripted ones.

  6. It seems people of EU have a short memory. If the whole EU gets involved in a war, they might lose big. If President Trump is elected, the US will not sacrifice young American lives and money to save Europe. The US has already saved Europe during WWII and WWI. The EU war mongrels all talk big but when it comes to fighting, they surrender like France, Holland, Belgium, Italy, etc.

  7. The big threat to the EU has been the EU and it gets crazier everyday. I guess they want farms closed down so the workers can go fight in Ukraine. In 2014 it was the EU, US and NATO who pushed out the twice elected president while saying it was about democracy. People at the highest level of the US have been in charge sense then including Biden, who Obama put in charge to clean up corruption.when he is the most corrupt the US has ever known. My favorite part was the most senior besides JB was victoria nuland who was n the mob and passing out cookies while the leader was forced to flee the country and then she picked the new leader. It’s all on a taped phone call.
The Ukraine Nazi militia were also there, not sure if they got any cookies .

  8. The claim that Russia is seeking to take over more of Europe seems weak to me given the fact of it’s depleted number of soldiers. It would be 19 years before they could move to another target. Make a deal and end this.
