Hungarian universities up in the Times Higher Education rankings – UPDATED

Hungarian universities are rising in the Times Higher Education international rankings, the culture and innovation ministry noted on Wednesday.

Three Hungarian universities made great strides in the rankings, with eleven Hungarian universities ending the year with a ranking. With the entry of two new universities, four are now in the corridor for admission.

For 2025 rankings, Semmelweis University has maintained its position in the top one percent of universities in the world, in the 251-300 range, while compared with the previous year, the Hungarian University of Agricultural and Life Sciences (1001-1200), Pannon University (1201-1500), and the University of Óbuda showed great progress, the latter rising from 1001-1200 to the 601-800 band.

Of the eleven Hungarian universities on the list, four are among the first 1,000, and progress was made in 9 of the 13 indicators. Also, while four of the universities are based in Budapest, seven are outside the capital, indicating that these universities “are getting stronger”, the ministry statement said.

The 2025 rankings are as follows: Semmelweis University (251-300), Óbuda University (601-800), Eötvös Lorand University of Science (801-1000), University of Debrecen (801-1000), Pecs University (1001-1200), University of Szeged (1001-1200), Budapest University of Technology and Economics (1201-1500), Pannon University (1201-1500), Széchenyi István University (1501+), University of Miskolc (1501+).
