Aleksandr Katsuba: How green energy can help restore what’s been lost

Current state of the energy system

As of October 2024, Ukraine’s energy system continues to face serious challenges due to ongoing Russian attacks on infrastructure. Over 50% of energy facilities have been damaged or destroyed by shelling, leading to regular power outages across various regions of the country. Aleksandr Katsuba emphasizes that the traditional energy system can no longer function effectively under constant threat, which is why alternative energy sources need to be implemented more actively.

The key advantage of renewable sources is their mobility and ability to operate without centralized grids. Solar and wind power plants can be installed in various regions, including liberated territories, allowing for a quick restoration of energy supply even with limited resources. This makes green energy a strategically important element for the future of Ukraine’s energy system.

Growth of investments in green energy

According to Katsuba, the war has not only changed the approach to energy security but also opened up new opportunities for the development of green energy in Ukraine. In 2023, more than €500 million were invested in the sector, and this figure continues to grow. The Ukrainian renewable energy market has become attractive to international investors, who see its potential for rapid development.

Aleksandr Katsuba points out that one of the main factors attracting investors is Ukraine’s potential in solar and wind energy. According to the Ministry of Energy, Ukraine has one of the highest levels of solar insolation in Europe, making solar power plants particularly efficient. At the same time, the southern and western parts of the country have promising areas for building wind power plants. Katsuba emphasizes that the expansion of such projects will not only stabilize Ukraine’s energy supply but also create new jobs, contributing to economic recovery.

International cooperation and support

International partners are actively supporting the development of green energy in Ukraine. Specifically, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has provided a €100 million loan to finance solar power projects in the western regions. According to Katsuba, this financial assistance is a crucial step in rebuilding energy infrastructure as it allows for the rapid deployment of new technologies and the expansion of renewable energy use.

In addition to financial support, international partners are also providing technical assistance. For example, specialists from Europe and the United States are helping Ukrainian companies implement cutting-edge energy storage and distribution management technologies. Katsuba stresses that integrating such technologies is essential for ensuring the stability of the energy system in conditions of instability.

Green technologies in liberated territories

The use of green energy in liberated territories is another important aspect of Ukraine’s recovery. According to Katsuba, new technologies can be implemented faster in these regions since many traditional energy facilities have suffered significant damage. For example, new solar power plants are being installed in southern Ukraine, providing electricity to local communities and critical infrastructure.

Another important aspect is the implementation of energy storage systems, which allow the accumulation of surplus energy from renewable sources for later use. Aleksandr Katsuba believes that such systems will help avoid outages and ensure a stable power supply, even in the event of infrastructure damage.

The potential of hydrogen energy

In addition to traditional solar and wind power plants, Aleksandr Katsuba highlights the potential for developing hydrogen energy in Ukraine. Hydrogen, as an environmentally friendly energy source, could become an important part of the country’s future energy strategy. Ukraine has significant potential for producing green hydrogen due to its natural resources and geographical location.

Katsuba notes that hydrogen energy has great export potential, particularly to the European Union, which is actively seeking ways to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels. Several pilot projects for hydrogen production are already underway in Ukraine, and by 2030, the country is expected to become one of the main suppliers of this resource to the European market.

Green energy is not just a temporary solution for Ukraine during the war, but a strategic resource for the country’s future. It helps address current energy supply issues, creates new economic opportunities, and reduces dependency on traditional energy sources. With investment and international support, Ukraine has the chance to become a leader in renewable energy development, marking an important step toward energy independence and sustainable growth.
