Number of young Hungarians leaving country rises by half since 2000

(MTI) – The number of young Hungarians planning to either work or move abroad has risen by 50 percent since 2000, according to research published by the Central Statistical Office’s demography institute on Tuesday.

About a third of young Hungarians do not plan their future in Hungary — or not exclusively, at any rate, according to the data provided by the Tarki research institute.

In 2001, 22 percent of 18-39 year-olds planned to work or live abroad. This had gone up to 34 percent by 2005, the KSH institute said.

Close to 10 percent of the 18-39 age group, accounting for almost a third of Hungary’s population, said they not only planned to move abroad, but would certainly or most probably do so within a year or two.

They indicated Germany and Britain as the two main destinations for longer-term work or migration, followed by the United States and Austria, it said.
