International flights return to Hungarian airport in May!

Change language:

The flight will connect Pécs, a Southern Hungarian city with Munich and Malta. The Maltese Universal Air plans to resume summer flights between Pécs and Corfu since they flew with high utilisation rates last year. However, the future of the routes is not secure since the airline did not explain why they terminated their flights between Pécs, Munich and Malta between January and May. The local government would like to keep the flights in the winter season, and, in the long run, they would like to welcome low-cost airlines. However, the international airport of Eszék poses a considerable threat to the profitability of the Hungarian airport.

International flights return to Hungarian airport from May

The Pécs-Pogány International Airport was in a deep slumber between 2010 and 2024. It was modernised in the 2000s, but real developments were postponed. Therefore, only one scheduled flight touched it for six months, a route operated by Austrian Airlines. As a result, the Fidesz-led municipal council was pondering about its closure since maintaining it took a considerable amount of taxpayers’ money. In 2019, the opposition returned to the leadership and managed to reopen the airport last year in cooperation with the Maltese Universal Airline.

Universal Air said that they would like to resume the Malta-Pécs-Munich flights from May and would reopen the Corfu destination in the summer period. Planes will commute on both routes once a week. Telex reached out to the airline but received no answers concerning the issue.

Marina Molnár from Tensi Pécs, a local ticket sales partner, said they received little training for their cumbersome system, but apart from that, there were no serious problems with Universal Air. She said the utilisation of the flights varied between full-house and 30%, but their Corfu flight was very popular in the summer. Disruptions occurred, but nothing special compared to other similar airlines.
