Hungarian opposition Jobbik calls for European ban on carcinogenic clothing industry materials

Parliament’s consumer protection subcommittee is initiating a European ban on bisphenol, a chemical used in the production of synthetic clothing, Jobbik lawmaker Dániel Z Kárpát, the head of the subcommittee, said on Tuesday.

Speaking at a press conference, Z Kárpát welcomed the subcommittee’s decision, citing studies concluding that bisphenol could cause cancer and harm the hormone system.

Around one-third of women’s and children’s clothing in “cheaper stores” contain derivatives of bisphenol, Z Kárpát said.

He said the aim of the initiative was for bisphenol to be replaced by materials that are not harmful to people’s health.

“A danger to the health of a family or child is a big enough risk to warrant not keeping bisphenol derivatives on the market just in the interest manufacturers,” he said.
