Hungary’s parliamentary speaker strengthens ties with Egypt in official talks

László Kövér, the speaker of Hungary’s parliament, said at talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in Cairo on Sunday that Hungary appreciates Egypt’s being “a stable state with consolidated security in an unstable region.”

According to parliament’s press office, Kövér highlighted “the crucial importance of Egypt’s moderate voice” in terms of preventing a broader regional conflict and promoting ceasefire talks. Kövér said both Hungary and Egypt have an interest in “preserving the achievements of a regional consolidation process interrupted by the Middle Eastern conflict.” The talks also touched upon the impacts of the war in Ukraine as well as bilateral economic ties.

Kövér visited Egypt at the invitation of his counterpart, Hanafy El Gebaly, who referred to ties between the two countries as “based on mutual respect and traditional values”. At their talks, Kövér assured his host of Hungary’s continued support to Egypt at international forums, including ties with the European Union. “We unconditionally support Egypt and encourage countries of the EU to follow suit so that Egypt can retain its current stability and continue to act as a counterbalancing force in North Africa,” Kövér said.
